Hi Everyone! I am a copyeditor and I work a lot with university students writing applications for entrance to university. I have noticed that they are starting to use AI generated essays. This will not gain them any favour if the institution concerned finds them out - on the contrary, I believe they are at risk of not being accepted at all if they are caught 'cheating'. And rightly so. But there are so many apps that 'guarantee' that they can spot AI generated stuff 90%+ of the time that it makes my head spin, and I don't have the time to explore them all and try them out. Just to make it more complicated, I recently came across a research report from Stanford University that found that non-native English speakers use language and terminology differently to native speakers and as a result "Software to detect AI generated text from ChatGPT has been shown to be biased against non-native English writers" (see link) ... and most of my students are non-English speakers! I believe that for every adverse situation there is an opportunity waiting to be seized but for the life of me I can't think of one. My name is Jeff. I’m one of the 60+ year old retiring boomers in the US. In the past 5 years, I have been caring for my aging parents. I saw how they were left behind by innovations such as Smart Phones when their diminished eyesight, hearing, memory, cognitive function, and finger dexterity (tremors) were no match for the required sensory capability to interact with these otherwise very useful technologies. I recognize that AI and Machine Learning are bringing yet another revolution into our lives. I’m particularly interested to learn how AI may overcome the tech gap for aging seniors by enabling them (and their adult children) to manage their lives with greater quality and independence through AI assistance.
