Account hacked and withdrawn hard earned money

We have been doing our business on UPWORK for past 10 years and we FIRMLY trust security and protection UPWORK has been providing so far. Recently, we faced issue on Friday (June 24th, 2022) where our Hard earned money ($15k) has been withdrawn by someone and they have been processed our money to JAPANESE bank. Within 2 minutes, we have informed UPWORK and still someone from UPWORK team has proceed transferred successfully. Multiple times, we have raised this issue and we have no longer access to our PRIMARY account. Hence, all of our clients have been trying get in touch with us for daily updates on our ongoing contracts.

 

Similarly, we have been reading same incidents on UPWORK community where people are losing hard earned money to same bank (MUFG bank ltd JAPAN). Having these many incidents being occurred recently on UPWORK, there should be STRICT actions taken from yours side when payment has being processing particularly from same bank. Why there is no action from UPWORK specially when it comes to freelancers/agencies who have been doing business for many years?

 

Now, as we do not have access to our PRIMARY account, we are losing more business day by day. Since Friday, we are trying to get in touch with SUPPORT and there are no positive updates from their side except one GENERIC response that "our account team is reviewing". What is benefit to inform instantly after money being deducted from UPWORK account? Waiting for getting updates and not having access to our account, it is really testing our patience.

 

PLEASE TAKE STRICT ACTIONS OTHERWISE I WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW LEGAL PROCEDURES!

I am sorry to hear about this. I checked and see that our Account Security team has already taken steps to secure the account from unauthorized activity and shared additional information with the agency owner. While I won't be able to share details here in the Community, rest assured the team will continue assisting the agency owner with this situation.

This is terrible, and you definitely should take all legal action against the person who stole your money. What did the Japanese bank say? Can you have the payment reversed?

There are a number of accounts of this happening, and I still don't understand how. How was your upwork account hacked? They seem to target people who have large amounts in available, I'm assuming most freelancers don't keep their money on upwork for any length of time, I certainly don't. So I have to assume you were targeted specifically. 

Please share your insights how this happened, it would be very beneficial to know that. 

Are you sure you're not jesting? Because I just saw someone else posting this thread on the 'clients' discussion group. 

If you're true and have lost your money, please don't copy and paste someone else and reach out to customer support and other legal forums; however, if you're just being playful, please stop and don't cloud the chances of legitimate applicants to get their hard-earned money back. 

They are part of the same agency, but spamming never helped anyone. But we all know that money is gone, and upwork will not do anything about it. He needs to take up with the bank, not upwork. 

I still want to understand how the scam works, though. 

This happened numerous times, same bank, similar pattern.

Upwork can at least ban the bank. It's a shame that a big Japanese bank "acts" like a "crypto bank".

Also, well, lemme understand the scenario, once you open up an Upwork account, your bank account's name must match with your name on Upwork, correct? How did it happen that someone just 'hacked' your account, attached a bank account without any authentication and sent the money to that account instantly. If you didn't report your account being hacked for days until a new bank account was attached, I should think that this isn't true. 

 

Well, even if you're an agency and the bank account attached to your Upwork ID wasn't on your name, it is still dubious to think that someone just hacked your account, attached a bank account and sent the money to that instantly! 

 

I'm sorry if this seems rude but I'm just trying to understand what's happened?

Well, that's the point, it shouldn't happen but it happened, numerous times.

 

If the account is compromised, there will be a lot of currently unthinkable ways to trick the system, the account owner, and Upwork. Can't depend to those "must use the same name", "security period", "notification email", etc., if the account is compromised already.

 

You fit the criteria for being a victim btw. ๐Ÿ˜

 


As far as I can see, this happened to freelancers in South Asia only. Am I wrong? What other similar point between these cases? If it's a phishing or social engineering case, how and where it happened?

When people lost thousands of dollars in an instant without knowing how or what, the panic spam etc are understandable (at least to me).

I hope Upwork takes it seriously as one of its core features (payment safety) is getting compromised here and I hope Cirkle  has already made a cyber security complaint on this. Please let us know what steps you've taken and what support Upwork is providing to you.

Hello Nikola, Thank you for considering our CONCERN here into community, but sadly, I (agency owner) STILL haven't got any response from your team. Also it has been two weeks, I still did not get my hard earning back, so please UPDATE me as soon as possible.

Appreciate if you can SPEED up the process specially if it comes to your platform members and their hard earned money!

Hello Avery, thanks for response!

For two weeks, I am only hearing that it is under investigation without moving one step further. We are giving responses immediately to all of your UPWORK team and yet not getting any positive signs. We are also reading about many similar incidents in the UPWORK community, please make sure to accelerate the investigation process OR include more team members in it. And kindly keep in MIND that we have LOST a huge amount of MONEY, this shouldn't be the SPEED to tackle situations like these.

Do not tick "SOLVED" if you have not returned our MONEY. Being in under investigation for more than 2 weeks, does NOT mean SOLVED. 

I am not getting any response from the account team manager, have been trying to reach them since last week. 

We are HONESTLY disappointed: UPWORK is a TOP NOTCH PROFESSIONAL FREELANCER PLATFORM that claims to provide the BEST ACCOUNT SECURITY and PROTECTION, and we have been a TOP RATED PLUS member for many years. How can this kind of SCAM happen in the first place? And if it does, In a situation like this:  We expect prompt and helpful responses, at least a CONVENIENT support system where we can reach out to someone instead of having to wait days for an email response, and **PRE-REMINDERS** for every UPWORK member to have been made aware of this SCAM when the FIRST SCAM occurred.

It is NOW time to come up with the solution to this ACCOUNT INVESTIGATION and return our EARNINGS (around $15k USD) as SOON as possible!
