Direct Contracts now live for all freelancers

To help grow and support your freelance business on and off Upwork, we are releasing Direct Contracts to all Upwork freelancers today. With this new release, we have also expanded the functionality to now include multiple milestones.

Direct Contracts allows you to enter into fixed-price contracts with non-Upwork clients, offering access to Upwork's safety and security features with greater flexibility for your business. Freelancers can access their Direct Contracts by clicking on the new paper airplane icon next to notifications or directly here.

Here’s how it works:

On the Direct Contracts page, freelancers will see the option to start a new Direct Contract and a list of all existing Direct Contracts along with the status of that contract.

The steps to start a new Direct Contract are very simple:

1. Enter your client’s details

1. Create.png

2. Add either a single amount or create milestones with each amount

3. Review and send the contract

3. Review.png

4. An email is sent to your client to begin

4. Confirmation.png

Your client will receive an email notifying them of your detailed proposal, along with some guidance on how the product works.

Just like your other fixed-price contracts on Upwork, your client deposits project funds in escrow before the contract starts. You will see the status of the milestone listed below each one, so you will know when to begin working. When you’ve completed the contract or each milestone, you’ll request payment from your client. And with Direct Contracts, once they’ve accepted your request, the funds are released to you immediately, with no security period.

As a freelancer, you’ll pay a processing fee of 3.4% of the total contract amount, but you won’t pay any freelancer service fees to Upwork. It’s easy for your clients because they won’t have to create an Upwork account.  And with payment protection and dispute assistance, you can work confidently with your clients who are not on Upwork.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Do the invoices work the same, so i get invoice from upwork? Like the normal process without direct contract?

Thank you

Hi Muammer,

Thanks for reaching out. While I can confirm invoices are available as part of the Direct Contract feature, I'd like to clarify that, at this time, Direct Contracts are only for clients without an Upwork account. Having both is a violation of our Terms of Service. If you receive a request from a freelancer to create a Direct Contract and you already have an Upwork client account, you should decline it. Instead, please post the job from your existing account and invite the freelancer so you can hire them. You can find more information in this Help article.

Hello Lena,

I used the Direct Contract option with a client I brought from Linkedin in June, and the experience was superb.

Unfortunately, I introduced the Upwork Direct Contract to a new client, and the enterprise bought into it. They were not ready to use platforms. They want to deal with freelancers directly, but I told them they could leverage Direct Contracts.

They bought into it.

I logged on and created a contract only to discover that Direct Contract is not available in my country (something that I used in June). I was almost looking unprofessional, so I decided to work with the enterprise directly without any escrow service(against my wish).

I am not interested in knowing which countries can access Direct contracts. I only want to plead to Upwork Developers to please kindly delete (Direct Contract from the user interface). It's a poor UX design if some countries cannot use a service, and it is still visible on their interface. It's like telling a client you offer a product, and you enter the store to pick the same and later inform the client that the product is no longer available. It's so unprofessional and annoying. I am not happy, but life continues.

Please, Lena, kindly relay the message to the unit in charge so the Upwork user interface can be great again like it used to be.

( Remove the Direct Contract option from the interface of countries that could not access the service).

Thank you!

Elijah

I couldn't find this in the FAQ.

What's the method for withdrawing the money from Direct Contracts? Will that money be added to my main freelancer account or will it be separate?
Because, how it stands now, my freelancer earnings and my agency (which I own) is a separate one, and I have to pay wire transfer fees twice for no good reason.
So will Direct Contract be another separate account that will cost me more wire transfer fees or..?

Hi Branislav,

The released payment for your Direct Contract will go to your account and you'll be able to withdraw it as usual using the Get Paid button.

Thank you!

It is possible to track time with the desktop app for a Direct Contract project? I would also like to be able to add the client to the app for messages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Timothy,

This option is only for fixed-price contracts. You won't be able to use Messages for Direct Contracts. You may wish to discuss with your client the best way to communicate (email, another messaging option, etc.)

Thanks for the quick reply. Just thought it would be nice to keep everything in Upwork. Can this be submitted as a suggested improvement?

Thanks.

Yes, Timothy!

We'll share this with the team for their consideration. Hopefully, it can be considered for future releases.
