Re: Expanding Specialized Profiles for Freelancers

Greetings of the day!

I was looking into the feature of Upwork which allows the freelancer to add a specialized profile to their existing one. Many questions popped into my head and here those are

1: Since I only work in the category of "Graphic Design" in "Design and Development", should I create only 1 specialized profile and add the plethora of tasks I do? Or else, should I create a specific profile for each provided the fact that every sub-category in Graphic Design is important? (For example, my expertise is Logo, Brochure, and Website Design. Does that mean I should create three special profiles?)

I think that's all. Will absolutely be grateful for any hints, suggestions or reviews.

Hi Zoha,

Thanks for your question! I would recommend creating the Graphic Design Specialized Profile. You'll find that in Step 2 when you're creating the profile you'll be able to include the more detailed information about the type of designs you create: Brochures and Logos.

Over time as we learn more about the different types of skills and types of work Designers produce, we'll add new questions like these so that you can showcase more of your specific skills and abilities in your profile.

We will also ask similar questions to clients when they are creating job posts - this is how we'll continue to improve our ability to match you with the right jobs!

Best,

Cary

Thanks Carey!

Presently it allows me to add two more specialized profiles, so I will take it as an advantage and add two of my expertise in.

Totally loving the feature, and hope it works as help to Upwork search engines and us freelancers.

With hopes of it getting better as people explore it further!

One quick feedback.

Instead of uploading a portfolio twice(One for specialized profile and the other general one) Can we instead have an "Edit" button on the portfolio along with "Add" which allows us to select the portfolio from our general profile which we think will go on the specialized ones as well.

Thanks

Hi Zoha,

We're glad you like the feature and are sharing your experience with us! Please note that if you add portfolio items to your specialized profile, they will also be included in your general profile so there's no need for uploading the samples twice. Have you tried uploading a sample and experienced a different flow?

This is great! I just received the invitation to create the specialized profile but when I click the option, seem the link is not working, is there a way to fix this or do I need to do something else?
Thanks!

Hi Alfonsina,

Do you get any error when you click on the link? You can also go to Find Work> Profile and access your Specialized Profile draft.

Specialized profiles is a good idea, but specializations list isn't well made.

For what I'm interested in, there are:

1. Video Production (I assume, live-action videos, AKA filming. That's not completely clear or me, for clients especially. They call "videos" everything - 2D and 3D animation, live action videos... any moving images - and they're right)

2. Videographer (the same?)

3. Video Editing/Post Production

4. 2D animation

5. 3D animation

6. Motion Graphics Design (why on earth is this a separate category??? Motion graphics IS just a particular type of animation, either 2D or 3D)

7. Cartoonist (again, cartoons IS JUST A PARTICULAR TYPE (or style) OF ANIMATION,  can be either 2D or 3D)

So you, Upwork staff, just have made more difficult for clients to find a freelancer for their job, and more difficult for freelancers to be found.

I personally make videos - shoot and edit live action videos, and make 2D and 3D animations (motion graphics mostly, but not only).

So which 2 specializations should I choose to be found and to make the job, what is in our common interests, guys?

Why won't you make just:

1. Live action video production (AKA filming, videography, cinematography, shooting vids)

2. Video Editing/ Post Production

3. 2D animation (meaning motion graphics, cartoons, and all the possible types and styles included)

4. 3D animation (motion graphics, cartoons, and all the possible types and styles included)

OR even:

1. Live action video production (AKA filming, videography, cinematography, shooting vids)

2. Video Editing/ Post Production

3. Animation (2D and 3D, since many freelancers do both. Motion graphics, cartoons, and all the possible types and styles included)

Also, would be nice if you made a note about which specialization means what (as I did in brackets, but in a  clever way)

Quick question, can we edit the category of the specialised profile? I have one, and I'm considering using the second slot too, but I realised when I edit the current Illutration profile, I can't really change the category - only  the title and the other custom text fields. Does that mean that once I've created two sub-profiles, I'm left with whatever categories I've chosen for them unless I decide to delete them? And if I do decide to delete one of them, do I get back the slot to add another, different sub-profile later?

Sorry about the delayed response, Bojana. That's correct that currently a freelancer would need to delete their specialized profile in order to switch to a different service. After deleting one specialized profile, you should be able to add a new one.
