Freelancers can propose new contracts with existing clients

A few months ago, we invited some of you to try a new function that lets freelancers suggest follow-up projects with clients you’ve worked with before.

We heard some great feedback from users here in the forums and through other communication channels.  You told us that although this was a good idea, you would rather propose a new contract on the Upwork site instead of through an email link as we were providing. You also wanted freelancers to have the ability to create a contract for hourly or fixed-price projects, which clients could simply review and approve.

We thought this would be a good idea too, and would perhaps reduce the friction that we sometimes hear from clients and freelancers when trying to rehire for another job. So, in the coming weeks we’ll be releasing a new feature that gives freelancers the ability to propose a new contract with an existing client, straight from the My Jobs page.

Freelancers, once you’ve discussed further opportunities and projects with your client and have agreed on starting a new contract, you can send them a proposed contract by clicking the “Propose New Contract” button from a contract in your My Jobs or All Contracts pages.

The contract form allows freelancers to set up the contract as hourly or fixed price with proposed milestones. Clients can then simply accept, decline or edit the proposal which will then send an offer back to the freelancer.

Thanks for your feedback, we hope you enjoy this new feature. Let us know if you have any questions.

Lena, by "messaging" does that mean we can propose a contract to anyone that we message with?  I had two instances in the past couple of weeks where this feature could have been used and would have given the client an enhanced Upwork user experience.  Instead, they had to cut and paste my proposal into an Offer.

This is an excellent new feature.   There are clients who would just as soon not have to handle this chore themselves.

Once it's been working for a while, perhaps Upwork could consider extending it to apply to new clients with whom the freelancer has exchanged messages, as Kim suggested.

Hi Lena,

This is perfect, specially for us that came from Elance and asked for this... I notice that the "View Contract" button is replaced by the new one, I still would like to have access to the "View Contract" button... sometimes we have to have a look at the past project info.

Kim and Bruce,

It's currently only possible for freelancers to propose a contract to clients they worked with before. We do appreciate your feedback though and will be sharing it with the team.

Thank you!

Wilson,

You should be able to click on the contract title to view the contract details page.

I see what you mean, Wilson. The button to View Contract is still available in Messages if the contract is active. If the contract has been closed already it's replaced with Propose New Contract button. I'll share your feedback with the team as well.

Exactly! You know what, we should have both opions all the time since sometimes one project is still open and client asks to open a new one.

Thank you!

Wow that's quick, are you already testing this? In some workroom I am getting both options now 🙂

UPDATE: I see a big issue here, actually it's like if two buttoms from my top workroom have mixed... and when I try to propose a new project for the current client, it takes me to do it for the client just below in the list, please check that, I am happy to provide more details.
