Freelancers can propose new contracts with existing clients

A few months ago, we invited some of you to try a new function that lets freelancers suggest follow-up projects with clients you’ve worked with before.

We heard some great feedback from users here in the forums and through other communication channels.  You told us that although this was a good idea, you would rather propose a new contract on the Upwork site instead of through an email link as we were providing. You also wanted freelancers to have the ability to create a contract for hourly or fixed-price projects, which clients could simply review and approve.

We thought this would be a good idea too, and would perhaps reduce the friction that we sometimes hear from clients and freelancers when trying to rehire for another job. So, in the coming weeks we’ll be releasing a new feature that gives freelancers the ability to propose a new contract with an existing client, straight from the My Jobs page.

Freelancers, once you’ve discussed further opportunities and projects with your client and have agreed on starting a new contract, you can send them a proposed contract by clicking the “Propose New Contract” button from a contract in your My Jobs or All Contracts pages.

The contract form allows freelancers to set up the contract as hourly or fixed price with proposed milestones. Clients can then simply accept, decline or edit the proposal which will then send an offer back to the freelancer.

Thanks for your feedback, we hope you enjoy this new feature. Let us know if you have any questions.

If you can give us the ability to propose milestones to clients that would be great, many time I was asked by clients to do so

Hi Rami,

In Lena's announcement post, she shared that freelancers can now set up the contract as hourly or fixed price with proposed milestones. Clients can then simply accept, decline or edit the proposal which will then send an offer back to the freelancer.

As I had commented at the very beginning of this thread, I still think it would be great to be able to propose a contract to new and prospective clients.  I am still finding that new clients are sometimes finding it difficult to set up and send a proposal.  Allowing the freelancer to set up the proposal would improve the client user experience. I understand that a client should not be bombarded with proposals so perhaps this feature could be activated at some juncture of the interview process.

Can we just change the existing contract instead of proposing another one? This feature will create another contract from the one already existing right?

It would be great if we can select programming skills required when we prupose new contract to client or creating on behalf of them. As many time client wants work in wordpress but they select only PHP in programming skills/ languages required.

does proposing a new contract keep the pay history for the client, on which % Upwork commission is based? Or does it start from $0 at the full 20%?

Yes, it keeps the pay history.

I am currently working on an hourly contract for my client, but a second project came up that needs a milestone project. Can I propose a new contract using milestones while keeping my existing hourly contract open? In other words, does proposing a new contract, overwrite the existing contract you are working on?
