How Job Success Score is Calculated

The Job Success Score (JSS) reflects client satisfaction with work accomplished by talent and is based on relationships, feedback, and job outcomes over time. We understand how important this score is, and we want to share another data point that we use to calculate it.

It’s called your “Trending JSS,” and it is based on your most recent Upwork history. 

 

Note: This is not a new calculation, we are just sharing these additional details to bring more transparency to JSS.

Here’s how it works:

Four different Job Success Scores are calculated every two weeks:

  • Your average JSS during the past 24 months 
  • Your average JSS during the past 12 months 
  • Your average JSS during the past 6 months 
  • And your “Trending JSS,” which we calculate by adding your average JSS for the past 6 months with your average JSS for the past 3 months, then divide in half.


To get each score, you must have enough qualifying outcomes from enough clients within that time window. Once the four scores are calculated, we choose the highest score and display it on your profile.

For example, if:

  • Your average JSS during the past 24 months is 92%
  • Your average JSS during the past 12 months is 88%
  • Your average JSS during the past 6 months is 94%
  • And your “Trending JSS” is 96% (based on your 3-month average of 98% and your 6-month average of 94%. This leads to 98+94=192, which when divided in half is 96%).

 

We would review all four percentages and, as mentioned above, select the highest one as your JSS. So in this example, the JSS listed on your profile would be 96%.

Keep in mind, your score may go up or down as your old contract outcomes age and move into another of the four calculations. Rest assured that any movement in your score (either up or down) has taken into account both recent activity and activity over a longer period of time (up to 24 months).

My question, is what consitutes "enough qualifying outcomes" for the 3-month window?

I noticed there are way more freelancers without a JSS than before when no-feedback contracts used to factor in.

Talking about JSS, what happens if during a period of six months you work only for a client in an hourly, and get no feedback because the contract has not ended and the client has not submitted feedback. Can in such case the JSS be in way of dissappearing?. Perhaps it is exagerate, but, is there a minumum of contracts to complete for you to retain enough data for retaining a JSS?. Or the JSS cannot disappear for large times without feedbacks but working? (if that client continues working with you it means that he/she is happy with you).

" to continue working" means to UW that the client activates new milestones, or that the client accepts or sends new contracts over time?  Or does not matter? Because open contracts after done jobs are bad, so I learned.

Emanuel, I have several really old contracts that remain open and it hasn't affected my JSS.

Hi Abinadab,

 

We did reduce the minimum number of clients required to earn a JSS from three to two with the last update. So if talent worked with two different clients and both left feedback, they will have enough outcomes for the score to be calculated for that time window.

Hi Lucio Ricardo,

 

Having long-term active relationships is considered an indicator of client satisfaction within the Job Success Score. Such contracts, even if they haven't been closed with feedback yet, will count as positive outcomes.

Hi Emmanuel,

 

While it's a good practice to close a contract where all the work has been completed and there are no plans to use it for future tasks, open contracts without recent activity do not affect JSS negatively.

As you said, Having long-term active relationships is considered an indicator of client satisfaction within the Job Success Score.  

If so,  a long-term job with about 6 months of high activity must have positive effect on JSS. My question is that, if this job remains open for 2 more months but inactive and with no works, may it lose its previous positive impact on the JSS?

Closing contracts before the relevant Top Rated Plus eligibility threshold is reached removes them from counting toward such eligibility. If a client's need for work is—or might be—intermittent, it is arguably better to leave fixed-price contracts open and add milestones as the need arises. (Like plans, "no plans" can change.)

Hi Arman, 

 

No, a long-term job like that won't lose it's positive impact on JSS right away. However, it's positive impact will fall off of the calculation eventually. And that's because the score is calculated for your three-, six-, 12- and 24-month history in the marketplace and the best one of these scores is shown on your profile.
