This month we will be rolling out a new monthly subscription plan for clients called Upwork Plus. Upwork Plus is designed to provide clients with the tools and support needed to find top talent faster and more effectively in order to help their businesses grow.  With this new offering, we are also introducing a new Upwork Basic membership plan for clients. These new plans will better address the needs of growing businesses, and will scale with them as their hiring needs change.

The benefits of Upwork Plus are:

  • Access to dedicated account managers and specialists to help understand client hiring needs and source top talent with applicable skills for their job.
  • Project tracking tools helping coworkers to collaborate easier with each other to find and hire talent.
  • Access to 24/7 chat, call or email support so clients can quickly connect with support at their convenience.
  • More freelancer invites. Plus members get 15 invites to proactively reach out to freelancers and agencies that have the skills you’re looking for.
  • One free Featured Job per month to boost the visibility of the client’s job to Top Rated and Rising Talent freelancers and agencies who receive a reduced service fee if awarded the job.

  • An Upwork Plus badge that will display on job posts and in job details distinguishing Upwork Plus clients from others, as serious business clients.
  • Access to the Business Corner, a private community forum for Upwork Plus members to share knowledge and access resources.

Upwork Plus costs $49.99/month + 3% payment processing fee, unless clients qualify to pay by bank account. If a client qualifies to pay by bank account, their payment processing fee of 3% is included in their monthly membership fee and they won’t pay any additional fees for bank account payments.  These changes will be reflected in the Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement.

Upwork Basic Membership:

Upwork Basic is a free plan option that provides clients all the core tools they need to find and hire freelancers on Upwork. Upwork Basic clients will be able to post jobs for free and can invite up to 3 freelancers for each job. Payments processed on the Basic plan will be charged a 3% payment processing fee.

By default, new clients will automatically be on our new Upwork Basic membership plan and can choose to upgrade at any time.

What does this mean for existing clients?

Existing clients who have registered on Upwork before February 25th, 2019 and who have been active on the site in the last 15 months will be grandfathered into their current plan with no changes to their current offerings or payment processing fee.

Please note: If existing clients upgrade to Upwork Plus and then decide to downgrade, they won’t return back to their grandfathered offerings, instead they will be placed into the new Upwork Basic.

What does this mean for freelancers?

Freelancers will see no changes to their experience. Freelancers can distinguish Upwork Plus clients in the marketplace by looking for the Upwork Plus badge that will display on job posts. Top Rated and Rising Talent freelancers may also benefit from an increase in the amount of Featured Jobs being posted as they will receive a reduced service fee if they are awarded a Featured Job. Also, with the addition of Upwork Plus for clients, freelancers should receive more targeted invites to jobs as clients will be more selective with the invites they can send.

Of COURSE they will. Are you kidding?

It is like Ying and Yang. When you make changes to one, it affects the other.

You mean  "You will continue to receive less invites because clients are not allowed to invite more than 3 so the lottery odds were stacked against you again."

You mean "those people" will meddle even more than they do already?

Now we know where all the so-called "talent specialists" have been reassigned.

Petra's is RIGHT. I don't care what Upwork charges buyers but when it NEGATIVELY impacts the other half of your profit margin (freelancers) I do care.

Might I suggest a rider of sorts for this initiative?

It does make sense (other than the incompetent talent specialists) to offer a package deal to buyers who spend in excess of 10k a month on the average. $120k per annum.

It does NOT make sense to offer this 'initiative' to all buyers.   Frankly, successful FLers are also successful salespeople and know a used car-tire kicking approach when we see one.  As the program stands now ... this is exactly what it is.

Petra is completely right. The situation on UW is getting worst and worst and will continue to deteriorate. Fifty bucks are ridiculously high, if freelancers pay 10$ for plus membership then why clients have to pay 5x more? This has already become a place for low budget clients and things will not get better. I feel sorry for that, I really like UW but will have to think about a different job provider.

Very happy to see that FINALLY invitations are limited to avoid all of those scam "need to hire 99 freelancers" posts.

But Petra's right - let's not fool ourselves into thinking this will be all positive or "no change" for freelancers. The number of quality clients on this platform has decreased significantly over the last two years, and paid memberships may backfire.

3 invites is not enough to give a new client a decent enough experience to want to pay for this service - especially if their hiring needs are sporadic. Why pay monthly? They will be swamped with unqualifed applicants to sift through because their mere 3 invites only resulted in one response and that freelancer's fees are too high. And so.. retaining new repeat business will be a challenge at best.  They should get at LEAST 5 invites.

$50/month...  that's a ridiculous price for what you guys are offering for that money.

And your best freelancers who rely solely on invites, and get so much less now, will focus their efforts elsewhere, leaving the less qualifed ones to apply for jobs.

This is not how to save the platform. I fear this is the beginning of the end. Most clients won't want to pay for this and you reduced the basic plan to something that will produce a less than desirable experience and won't bring on new clients. Sounds like a lose-lose to me.
