oDesk, can you please just cut the marketing lingo and spin, it's insulting. Just state that this is what you decided to do, period. Lies that are repeated over and over again only become the truth eventually in politics. We're not stupid.

I can tell you that this will not benefit me as a freelancer, and it solidifies my decision to stop hiring on oDesk as a client. I have no interest in hiring someone who bought themselves to the top of my list. I hire based on skill, not number of connects. Also, how does this new system affect my all star gold membership?

As a freelancer, I wouldn't mind paying more if I received some value in return. If you want to create additional streams of revenue, make sure you're offering something in return. As it stands, you expect us to pay a membership fee to be able to land a job - this is the reality of your connects system - while you haven't rolled out one feature that wasn't riddled with bugs in years. Improve the quality of your development work, and go ahead and charge us - I'll be the first one to sign up.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Krisztina.

We still encourage clients to make hiring decisions based on the candidate's skills and experience and regardless whether they paid for their membership or not.

As a client you may start getting fewer applications from freelancers, but since we expect freelancers to put more effort into their applications and cover letters and be more selective about the jobs, it should generally improve your hiring experience. Of course we want our high performing freelancers to continue being successful on oDesk no matter if they choose Free or Paid membership.

Valeria - thank you for addressing my post. You said I will start seeing fewer applicants assuming that that's what I want. I don't. On my last job post I received 8 applications - none of them were truly qualified - your connects system will reduce this number further, and nothing guarantees that those candidates will be more skilled. They'll simply be freelancers who wanted to spend their connects on my job - just like my previous applicants thought it was a good use of their time to apply to a job they weren't awfully qualified for. I hired on Elance before, the people who bought themselves to the top of my list were not the most qualified ones.

You never addressed my question re: all star freelancers. How will this affect the all-star freelancer club? I think I know the answer but I'd love to hear it from oDesk directly.

Krisztina, the introduction of the Memberships should not affect the benefits you already receive as an All-Star freelancer.

New question:

We get 60 connects per month, right? Given that I only use 20 in Febraury, I still have 40 left for this particular month. Will I then have 100 the next month (40 from February + 60 new ones from March)?

@the rest: It already has been said. These new changes are a complete nightmare and I am sure that I will now primarily use other income sources rather than oDesk.

You never listened to our feedback and you won't do so now. Just have a look at 45 pages of unhappy freelancers and stop your "improvements". This is not improving anything at all.

Best,

André

Thank you for your question, André.

Ability to roll over Connects is one of the benefits of the Plus Membership. So on a Basic plan you will be getting 60 connects and they will reset once a month. Whatever unused Connects that remain at the end of your membership month do not carry over to the following month.

On a Freelancer Plus membership, unused Connects roll over to the following month (up to 70). Thus, the maximum number of Connects you could have at the start of your membership month is 140 (70 from current month + 70 rolled over from previous month).

What about returning Connects for completing job?

Let's say I like to take contracts that take about an hour to get completed.

Let's say I spend 10 Connects to get such contract.

That looks like I am forced to

- either work long terms

- either not work more than 6 hours per month

it would be nice if getting a contract (closing one sometimes take a year after job is done) would gain 10 Connects, so that i can keep searching for small jobs.

Btw, i uderstand the idea of oDesk management, and eventually it can be beneficial for everyone. But screaming people on disucssion are right about one thing - you can't force people to go to heaven. Unless you want people to take you wrong, and misbehave, you need to give them oppurtunity to feel you are right.

Like maybe make this feature optional and stand out people who accept it (yet still keep visible the rest, so that newbie clients dont get lost, and can decide, what they want)

This way both cients and freelances can try both aproaches and compare what's better for them.

Dmitry has made a point here which I believe has NOT been addressed.
What of the very short project specialists?
If Dmitry is bidding on and doing a few projects every single day, projects that may only take an hour, the connects model doesn't fit well with his specialty.
Having the connects used on applying to a job after the job has been successfully completed is actually a good idea that would rectify the situation.

Hi Dmitry,

Thank you for sharing your insightful feedback about applying and working primarily on short-term contracts, we will share it with the Team. So far, Connects will only be refunded if a job is removed by the oDesk team, (for a policy violations, for example).

With this connects, now there is no odesk or elance. Now its one company. And unfortunately as I read in forum many people said, now odesk is the most expensive platform for freelancers which is absolutely right. Its hard to work here now. there are many clients who post project and never hire, but got good amount of money spent already. So in that case, the bid will be wasted. And with 30 bids per month only, it will be a massacre here now. It’s a decision which is good in favor of odesk. But certainly not good for people who work here. I cant say I am happy. I think many people will now move to other portals. Even I myself left Elance only because the system there is really bad. Now same with odesk.
