UPDATE: This is already live. You’ll see these free Connects added to your account at the start of your next billing cycle. You can find this date on your Memberships and Connects page under User Settings.

In December, we’re upgrading Connects to provide you free monthly Connects and bonus Connects for interviews you win. You’re doing amazing things on Upwork, and more Connects means more chances to do the work you love.

We’ve seen a huge surge in client activity, and our work marketplace is full of opportunities for all the incredible talent on our platform. We can’t wait to watch you use these Connects to win your share of these opportunities, form stronger relationships with clients, and grow your career on Upwork.

We introduced paid Connects to keep spam from crowding out your proposals and help you win the jobs you want. But we want to ensure connecting with clients is exciting and affordable, so we’re changing our program to provide you with the Connects you need to build deeper relationships and unlock the best opportunities.

Here’s exactly what you can expect:

Freelancer Basic Plan

Receive 10 free Connects per month (according to billing cycle)

Freelancer Plus Plan

Receive 80 Connects per month (70 + 10 free Connects)

(according to billing cycle)

Connects Rollover Limits

The Basic and Plus roll over limit is now 200 Connects

Interview Requests

Freelancers receive free Connects (the number may vary) when they win an interview with an established client on Upwork**

In December, you’ll see these free Connects added to your account at the start of your next billing cycle. You can find this date on your Memberships and Connects page under User Settings. You’ll also receive an email when your Connects are available for use.

These changes will create more opportunities for everyone in our community, and we’re continuing to explore other ways to show our appreciation for everything you do. Your success is our success, and we’re proud to provide a home where you can do the work you love, form lucrative relationships, and build an amazing independent business.

Update 7/23/2021: Note that when Connects are awarded for interview requests this will show up as two transactions in the Connects History. There is no change to how these are awarded, this is simply done for accounting purposes.

Muhammad, sorry, what? You mean the platform should favor a certain industry like software over some other like writing?

What kind of logic is that?

Sorry if I misunderstood...

How to get the free 40 connects after passing the Readiness Test?

Hi Imran,

As a part of the update to Connects that's coming up in December, if a freelancer hadn't taken the Upwork Readiness Test before and passes it, they will receive 40 free Connects as a bonus. Thank you.

Previously it was 60 per month. I hope it is the resonable connects. 10 is  low, and  it not make me to feel  better to use like i used when it was elance.

And,  when it was elance  (before merging odesk)  i felt like this as a professional site to earn money for the worthy hours spending. But afterthat lot of changes  i  havn't invested my time here to get the jobs as the service fee increased, connects were purchased by  money and  lot of projects budget is below 20$....

Upwork is not a platform dedicated solely to large projects. The freelancers should not dedicated only to large projects. Some of the best talent in the world will only be on Upwork as a "hobbyist" because they are gainfully employed already. Not all people are here to create a primary income stream. Some come to give great service and help smaller businesses that could never afford that kind of talent because they want to help give back as well as build a side income stream.

Removing free connects effectively removed bidding on smaller projects that you aren't bidding on anyway. Giving the ability to bid 1-2 small jobs per month is a step in the right direction, but still not great for those freelancers. Please try not to be so condesending to everyone just because they do not need your business model.

Sompura, my observation is that new freelancers don't yet understand that to make money you also have to spend money. In the case of freelancers, it's just a little bit as most of the income comes from converting your time to money. Most other businesses require much bigger capital to get started.

If it helps, think of it as an investment in building a sales channel that pays itself back VERY soon once you get things going on Upwork. Eventually, you can rely on just waiting for invitations so you will have a problem with having too many Connects, not too few.

It's a process. 😉

I wish you have a quick and productive start and are earning solid bucks in no time.

Welcome!

From reading this thread, I predict that giving out 10 free connects per month will have the opposite effect intended, and result in fewer overall bids being placed. Instead of people thinking that the 10 freebies are a bonus and accepting that they'll have to pay if they want more connects, most of the people on this thread sound like they never intend to pay for connects again - they're just going to wait for their free connects to be replenished each month, and complain as soon as they run out.

Also, everyone seems to be missing the part that says you'll get 10 more connects every time you're interviewed. If clients aren't interested enough to even send you a message at least once or twice a month, then you really are wasting your time here.
