Starting in mid-December, Upwork is required by law to begin collecting sales tax on various fees we charge to freelancers in certain US states. All collected taxes will be passed on to each freelancer’s state government.
We emailed all who may be subject to these tax laws.
Taxes charged are determined by a freelancer’s tax residency, which freelancers entered in their Upwork account under Settings > Tax Information.
If a freelancer hasn’t listed their tax residency, their taxes will be determined by the address registered to their account under Settings > Contact Info.
We encourage freelancers to verify that their tax address is accurate. They can update their tax residency under Settings then Tax Information. Freelancers can update their business address or contact information under Settings then Contact Info; they must use their business’ real and permanent address.
