In my experience, the only time the SP comes into play is when a client posts a job and sets a preference for one of the available specialized profiles. In that case your relevant SP will be shown to the client. But I think that's it?
ETA: other than coming up in search with lower hours worked & jobs etc. and making you look inexperienced...
oooh clients can search by specialized profiles? Or do you mean just by skills set by the freelancer in their specialized profile? If it's the former, I might have to give up and do it. boo
All I know is that when looking at a job posting it will say something like: this client is looking for a freelancer who specialises in editing & proofreading. I take that to mean that those SPs will be shown to this client first or be on top of the list.
Fun fact: when searching for freelancers with the filters "Germany" and "Editing & Proofreading" I come up on page 16 - and I do have a SP for this category. On the first 15 pages there is only one SP for editing & proofreading - on page 1; the freelancer has 0 earnings. And from page 11-14 it's only providers with 0 earnings...
All in all, this is really helping me stand out!!
Just great. So I am doing the right thing by not giving in to this bull. I'd really appreciate it if Upwork could minimize how much they annoy their users by removing the bloody popup if we choose not to use this "feature."
Clearly this will not remain an "option" as stated in the OP and they'll force this on us in one way or another ... probably make us pay for it too eventually.

I haven't set mine up based on reports that it shows your earnings as much lower in search, and my earnings are kinda a sales point so I'm hesitant to do it even though I would really like to.

Snafus with specialized profiles - w/thanks to Petra for extensive sleuthing
1. Earnings are not an accurate reflection of reality
Many of us wear more than one hat and segmenting jobs under titles - written by buyers who are NOT always cognizant of what is really needed - is ineffectual.
Unless skills are completely separate - i.e., web design and transcription - FLer earning on specialized profiles should be IDENTICAL with main profile.
2. Jobs Completed / Hours Worked > SAME as above
My suggestion is to create your specialized profile(s) and save in DRAFT. There are far too many current glitch and even more unknowns currently.

Tom I'm glad you posted this.
(Not sure if I should make a separate thread on this
I was intrigued when I saw the option for a specialized profile. I currently do Virtual Assistant type work, but I would really like to start doing writing and editing projects too. The problem is that I don't have much experience in this area, and I am not quite sure how to get started. I was thinking I could create a specialized profile to focus on that, but how do I go about getting jobs if I have limited experience and few samples? Thanks in advance for the help.

For everyone po'ed about the infernal pop-up ...
it goes away if you create a specialized profile but save it in DRAFT form.
Until U manages to correct the multiple errors w/ the program as detailed by many ... at least you will be rid of the pop-up.
You're welcome.

If you click this link, and head over to Functional QA, how many jobs do you see? If i view it as how others see it, I see only 2 jobs. But in fact, I have 4 jobs with 5 stars great feedback.
The system is working against me, or something just needs to get updated manually. I checked all projects. When I add the projects, I see the projects in the work and feebdack section. However, if i switch tabs to my general profile, refresh, and go tback to the functional QA-section, I see again the same 2 jobs.
Can someone please help me with this? I want my feedback to be shown on my profile.

Hi Erman,
Thank you for sharing the details of the problem you're having with assigning contracts to your specialized profile. I'll take a look, check in with our team and follow up with an update soon.

When copying jobs to a new specialized profile, do they default to displaying in reverse chronological order (newest jobs first)? Do we have any control over the display order?
