Thanks, Sanja. Just to clarify, I'm aware of the feedback we received from some other freelancers. The information I shared in my response to your post can also benefit other users, who might not be aware of our previous conversations or the roadmap and actions our dedicated team is taking while developing this feature further. I understand the problem and your sentiment towards the Specialized Profiles feature, and that has been shared with our team. I'd like to confirm we are getting positive feedback from both freelancers and clients, and are also seeing positive results when reviewing the metrics we're monitoring.

I'm curious what these metrics are that you're monitoring. Is there any chance you might share more information about this with us?
Without further transparency, it seems that any such metrics have to be biased in favor of specialized profiles. If Hertz only rented sedans, for example, their data would probably show that sedans were the most popular platform being rented. What about people who like SUVs? They're not represented, because Hertz didn't give them that choice.

You won't be able to upload a new portfolio item without selecting a Related Specialized Profile. Please know that this is working as designed. Specialized profiles allow freelancers to better showcase their portfolio items in a format that helps clients find best freelancers for their specific projects. However, if you don't want a portfolio item to show on a Specialized profile, you can go to that profile's portfolio section, click on the pencil icon in the upper right corner of that section and then un-select that item from the list.
This doesn't answer the question of why. Why are they required?
Please don't repeat how amazing they are. I understand you have been directed to tell us that, but it doesn't answer WHY we are being forced to use them. Upwork has unilaterally made the decision that these will "better showcase" our portfolio items. All you have done is create more work for us, maintaining multiple profiles a lot of us don't need.
I'm not basing this entirely on my own perspective, either. I recently became a client on Upwork and saw many, many freelancers apply for my project with these "showcased" profiles. All of which were the same. Seemingly they ran into the same issue (being forced to use them) with no desire or need to create a second description of what they do.
I don't manage two unique websites, one for my clients that require ecommerce and one for those who don't. I don't maintain two separate social profiles, one for my friends on the east coast and one for my friends on the west coast. I don't need two profiles on Upwork.
Crickets. Upwork doesn't even know why Upwork did this.
Please consider making specialized profiles optional. Forcing new features on us doesn't help anyone. Make them optional, so you can obtain accurate analytics of who uses them and who doesn't and how they're used. Use that data to improve or change course.
Or don't. 🤷🏼♂️
Hi Concetta and Kishion,
I checked your account, and it looks like you only have one specialized profile. The option to delete the specialized profile is not available in this case, and this is by design. We are now encouraging users to have a specialized profile so we want to ensure everybody owns at least one. Thank you.
Joanne - In an Upwork help section, it says I can't delete a specialized profile if I have only one - but that I can unpublish it so it won't appear on my profile. There is no ability to do that on my new profile page and I would like to know why. I do not want a specialized profile and I want to know why I am being forced to have it. If I don't get a transparent answer, I will write to the President of Upwork to see if she can give me one.
