Update to displayed client and freelancer names

As part of a broader effort to help protect the safety and privacy of our users' information and discourage off-platform work, we’ve updated how client and freelancer names are displayed on the site prior to interviewing.

Client names are now hidden in proposals and on job posts until the freelancer and client have connected in Upwork Messages to interview, at which time the client’s full name will be displayed. However, if you have worked with a client previously, you’ll be able to see their name on invitations to interview.

Freelancer names will be displayed as first name, last initial (ex: Ramesh T.) until the interview stage, when the full name will be visible.

Currently, freelancers have an option (under Settings>My Profile) to choose how to display their name.

We will still give freelancers this choice, but it will only determine if their full name can be found online (via a Google or other search engine search), if their profile visibility is set to “public.” Freelancers will no longer have the option to make their last name visible to clients on the Upwork site, and the setting will be updated to reflect this choice.

With these changes, both the freelancer and client maintain some anonymity until they agree to start the interview process. We understand that some of our users prefer to search for their clients/freelancers in Google before inviting or submitting proposals. Nevertheless, we feel that by reviewing a user’s profile, reviews, work history, Job Success Score, and any other profile information, users still have enough information to make an informed decision.

Let us know if you have any questions.

How is my privacy protected if my name is displayed in my application (yes, soon with an abbrieved second name) and the client's name is completely hidden? That is unbalanced and makes the process more intransparent for the freelancer. So, please hide the freelancer's name as well. Beware of applications to jobs offers from no name clients with an unverified payment method or Upwork's talent specialists recommending those clients! No, thank you! If Upwork is afraid that freelancers are hired outside of the platform (and it is obviously very easy for clients to do so) hiding the freelancer's name as well should be first choice.

Hi Margarete,

Please correct me if I'm wrong in saying that you were the one of the freelancers who requested increased privacy for freelancers profiles in order to protect your identity? I'm sorry if I'm mistaken but this update is directed towards the feedback we heard in the Community, in addition to the rational Lena shared in the announcement.

Regarding the job offers you mentioned, freelancers are advised to take proper steps when reviewing direct job offers and communicate with the client to confirm additional details they need. We will also update the process to display the client's payment method status in direct offers. If you have any issues with the invites you receive from our team, please do share them and we'll follow up with a confirmation like before.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

I have complained that I cannot see the client's details anymore and that my full name is shown in the messages to the client as soon as there is an active candidacy. Moreover, no client names are shown in archived applications anymore - even the name of my clients disappear from new jobs I have applied for as soon as those have been archived. I have always used my abbrieved second name. So, I do not see any improvement for me at the the moment. With no info available about clients their job offers are not attractive at all.

Hi,

I don't agree with upworks new name policy. There are most of the clients I lost from the Elance and Odesk merger, who knows me by my full name and if they want me to connect again and trying to search by my full name and they don't see any full name on my upwork's new profile, then how would I get business?

Does it make sense? I am sorry, but I really don't like your this idea of putting first name and then initial.

By the way, I don't see any edit icon (pencil) next to name (that's missing right now).

Can you please put my full name back as it was earlier. I am loosing business.

Regards,

Avn

Hmmm... not sure how I feel about this, but definitely not happy about clients being given total anonymity until the interviewing stage. At least we were able to see their name/company after applying for their job.

One thing is not clear to me: Is the freelancer's last name hidden if they're on the list of job applicants, or also when a client visits their full profile?

Isabelle Anne,

Freelancers' last names will be hidden on their profiles, in freelancer search and on their proposals. The full name will be shown only on the interview stage.

Ok, thank you for clarifying. From Lena's post, it seems that the change to freelancers' names hasn't been implemented yet - is there there an estimated roll-out date for that?

Edited to ask: And in cases like mine, will the middle name be hidden or shown? Just curious.

Yeah please keep Isabelle Anne without acronyms - That's a dear name to all of us.

Plus, since both Isabelle and Anne are French names, it would be a shame to hide them. You don't hide a French name.
