If you recently attended the Upwork Power Webinar: Proposals That Sell, you might have some follow-up questions you want to ask. Because it’s only an hour long, we don’t always get to address everything.

I followed through the recorded webinar on "proposals that sell" and i really loved it. You really did a great job. Thanks alot.

 

I am a freelance video editor and i really need help on how to clean up my profile to attract client attention.

 

I have submitted alot of proposals but got just one invite.

Hello James,

 

I've participated in Upwork Power Webinar: "Proposals That Sell" in Russian by Evgeniy Beloshytskiy on May 13th, 2021. Overall it was excellent webinar however, it contained some very misleading information about mandatory ID verification. I have searched everywhere and didn't find any possibility to verify my Government ID, my name, or perform visual verification initiated by my request. I learnt it is only possible (and mandatory) upon UpWork request. I believe that webinar coaches were instructed to announce this since Evgeniy was not the only one who mentioned it. On May 12th, 2021 in webinar "Winning Profiles" Catalin Modorcea said exactly the same thing. I deliberatly took time to write this additional feedback because it is important to inform the platform users (epecially beginners) on those matters very carefully. I spent several hours investigating this subject (which I could use for something else more useful) to find out the information is false or misinterpreted. It creates the impression that Upwork gurus don't know the platform policies and spread disinformation along with useful tips.

 

Please let the Upwork administration and all webinar coaches know about this issue. It would be great if they could update support page articles on this subject adding that it is not possible to initiate ID or visual verification by the account user but only by Upwork. It would save time and effort looking for the information elsewhere or writing to the support or community.

Hello Luiggi,

After I submitted my query with remarks on contradictions in Upwork’s new policies to Upwork Talent Success Team my profile for some strange "coincidence” was marked as “private only” without any possibility to change this setting.


So, I will repeat my questions, suggestions and assumptions I submitted earlier to Upwork Talent Success help but received no response to the matter of the subject.

In webinars for new freelancers I learnt that clients prefer verified profiles. However, according to new policies account holder’s ID verification is initiated by Upwork only after getting first proposal and prior receiving first payment. This creates a vicious circle for new freelancers - they are not attractive to the serious clients while ID verification could not be initiated by the account holder prior finding any clients. What solution in this case Upwork experts would suggest?

Could it be that Upwork implemented a clever way to force new joiners to purchase Plus subscription? Personally I wouldn’t buy anything on the platform where I haven’t earned anything yet and therefore, have not experienced what I am paying for. Besides that it is not a good sign for me when one rule contradicts another and there is no customer support where you could get an immediate and clear answer to any question.

Why does Upwork never admit their flaws or mistakes, and does not provide recovery services? I am confident that some platform users bring up issues worth to look into and make reasonable suggestions on how this issues could be solved. Yet, Upwork never rewards them with any bonus connects or extra specialised profile? Exactly opposite - they “punish” them with taking down the visibility of their profile the next day they brought up a serious matter (just like in my case).

I am really looking forward to hearing from Upwork on the solution they would suggest to my query. Especially on the highlighted question.

I'd like to clarify that profiles are set to private if you are a new freelancer and don't earn money on Upwork within 90 days of your first proposal, or you choose not to submit a proposal within your first 90 days. In this case, you are able to request that your profile be reset back to public here. That said, I went ahead and reset your profile visibility back to public already.

 

While a verified profile helps, it is not necessary for a client to be able to hire you that first time. I understand your concern and can assure you we are moving toward requiring all freelancers to verify their identity and this is slowly being rolled out to users of Upwork. Hi, there are a few questions I would like to ask.

1) Is there an Upwork team that can or reviews proposals?

2) How do I get testimonials from my former employers, clients or colleagues on Upwork?

3) Also my profile has been on Private for awhile now what do I do for it to be changed back to Public? Also I think this situation of changing a members' page to private if he/she doesn't apply for a job after some time should be reviewed. As in my case, I might check for jobs in a day & not find any that match my skills or interests me so I would not apply. I don't have any job at the moment but want one which I would enjoy, use my skills and learn new ones hence my being selective.

  1. We do have a team that coaches talent, but this limited program is available by invite only.
  2. Please review this help article for instructions on how to obtain testimonials for your profile.
  3. If you are a new freelancer and don't earn money on Upwork within 90 days of your first proposal, or you choose not to submit a proposal within your first 90 days, your profile is changed to private to improve client search results by only showing them active freelancers. This also rewards freelancers who regularly work and get paid through Upwork by ensuring that their profiles appear instead of inactive or unavailable freelancers in search results. Once you start earning again on Upwork, your profile visibility will be automatically reset. Alternatively, you can choose to subscribe to a Freelancer Plus membership to ensure that your profile visibility is never set to private. You can learn more here, but I have returned your profile to public visibility.
