Activity tracker and 0 keystrokes/ 0 mouse movements

Hi community, I hired a WordPress developer and have started noticing consecutive screenshots (20-80 minutes of time) all with the exact same image and 0 keystrokes and 0 mouse movements for each screenshot. Is there any possible acceptable explanation for this?

Thanks for your input.

I know you said that they all show the exact same image but...

Do all screenshots show the same time on the freelancer's taskbar clock? If so, then it should be some kind of issue with the time tracker

The time moves forward on the screenshots.

Hi Sandy,

You can communicate with your freelancer and ask them about their progress with the assignment. If they are unable to explain why the screenshots are the same and activity levels low, you will have an option to dispute the hours they logged.

The evidence speaks for itself. Asking accomplishes what?

The only credible explanation is "think" time..... (where; we don't know).

Yeah... we see this from time to time.

Mostly it's the sign of a completely fraudulent scammer. But he'll have all kind of explanations for this.

As a practical matter, if I'm the client:

I talk things over with my project manager. If the freelancer's work and value has really blown us away... If we know we're getting great work turned in by him and his work ends up costing us less than most of our freelancers' work. Then I will just not worry about the screenshots and keystrokes. Maybe he's using some kind of unusual set up. Maybe there was a very rare bug...

But if the freelancer's productivity is just so-so... and especially if its below average. Then I'm just going to thank him for his work, tell him we are done with that part now, and close the contract.

I've just realized that while the keyboard and mouse movements show 0, the activity level always shows 9 or 10. Does that sound like a bug in the tracker?

It is theoretically possible that there is a bug with the time-tracking software that we have not heard of and that we are unaware of, and it is something that only affects a very rare and untested computer setup that your freelancer is using.

But a more likely explanation is that the freelancer is using banned auto-clicker software to generate mouse-clicks/keyboard activity.

We have no way of knowing based only on what you have told us.

I would re-emphasize the importance of talking to your project manager and having her look very carefully at the work this freelancer has submitted recently and evaluating the quality and value of the work. Not just on the front end, but also the source code.

Is the freelancer doing what he was asked?

Did he do the work himself or simply copy files off the Internet and send them to you?

Is the freelancer providing value to your project, or is he taking 3 days to accomplish what other freelancers accomplish in an hour?

If you are unable to have your project manager evaluate the freelancer's work or evaluate it yourself, then you need to close the contract immediately and continue working only with the members of your team whose work diaries do not show such extreme abberations from what is expected.

No, the whole point of Auto clicker is the exact opposite, it shows as high mouse-clicks and keystrokes, absolutely never none.

Sandy, what operating system is the freelancer using? There have been situations where people with new Apple Operating systems had work diaries showing low to no keystrokes and mouseclicks because the transmission of that data was blocked, so the activity was there, but not transmitted due to an incompatibility.

But that would not explain why you see identical screenshots with just the time moving on, that is...... odd to say the least.

That said, I would suggest you look at the output. If the work is good in both quality and quantity, all is well either way........

The team confirmed that currently there are forms of activity on some systems that aren't always registered by Upwork App. They will still reflect in the activity levels but won't be recognized as mouse and keyboard clicks. This is something that our engineers are working on improving.

You may still want to discuss it with your freelancer and check if their deliverables correspond with the amount of time they are logging.
