How do I cancel a contract and release escrow back to me. The freelancer and I have mutually agreed to cancel without payment.

Hi Caroline,
You can go to your Jobs>Contracts and click on the name of the freelancer. Then from the contract details you can click End Contract. On the next page you will be asked if you would like to release funed amount to the freelancer or refund it to you. Choose the appropriate option and make sure you provide honest feedback.
I hope it helps.

Hi Alex,
I checked this for you, and the refund for your last closed contract was successful on our end. You can check this in your Transactions. After the refund is initiated, it typically takes 2 to 5 business days for the money to be refunded back to your credit card.
If this is not the case you're referring to, please click on my name and send me a PM with the Contract ID of the contract you're referring to. I'll check that for you and assist you accordingly.
Thank you.

How do I cancel a contract with a freelancer and release escrow back to me? The freelancer has provided incomplete work and does not meet the deadline, please let me know what to do?
Jan 11, 2021 10:46:31 AM by Andrea G
Hi Kym,
I checked and it looks like the contract you're referring to is a Fixed-Price contract. I see the funds are still in Escrow so you can request an Escrow Refund. To request an escrow refund:
Go to My Jobs to locate the contract
Click the (...) options menu and select End contract
Choose Pay nothing and request a refund
Your freelancer will have seven days to respond to the refund request, if no action is taken on their end the funds will be refunded. You can read more about this here.
Thanks!

Where did the End Contract button go?? It seems to have disappeared today.

Hi Enlai,
I've checked and do see the End Contract option on the contracts on your account. I also see you were able to end a contract within the last hour, so let me know if you need additional assistance with this process.

Thanks! Looks like it is fixed now. I've included the before and after screenshots.

I’m trying to end someone’s contract, but I keep getting error 504.
Apr 21, 2016 10:11:43 AM by Valeria K
Hi Natasha,
Could you please try ending the contract using a different browser or after clearing cache and cookies? Please, let me know if it still doesn't work.

Hi Valeria,
I tried with Firefox and Chrome, and also cleared cache. I continue to get error 540.
Thanks.

Natasha,
It appears there is a bug that prevents some clients from closing contracts. Our engineers are working to fix it soon. I'll update this thread once the fix is released.
Sorry about the inconvenience.

To be fair... some of this confusion is understandable given the multiple different ways that this process is referred to, both within the user interface and within help documentation and discussions:
- End Contract
- Cancel Contract
- close a contract
- terminate a contract

I accepted a job and due to time difference and time conflict, the client thought about endint the contract as he was getting impatient about fixing his issue. When I started to become available, he ended the contract and requested for a refund. However, after a couple of back and forth messages, he agreed to continue with me and we fixed his main after a couple of hours.
Now, how am I going to get paid since he ended the contract and asked for a refund earlier?
TIA.

Hi Lemuel,
Since the funds for this contract are still in Escrow, you can decline the client's refund request and they can later authorize the release of those funds to you. Please note that you should only accept contracts you're absolutely certain you have the time to complete.

Hello,
I recently accepted a job offer. The first milestone is set. But I want to cancel the contract. No funds were released.
I am wondering if I would have to go through account holding if I end it, and If I have to leave some public review?
Thank you.

Hi Jasmina,
I'd suggested communicating with your client prior to ending the contract and agreeing on this action. Ending a contract is not a reason for restricting a user's account in itself, and both parties will have the option to leave private feedback in case no money is paid on the contract.

It's not a thing you want to do on a regular basis, but you CAN simply end the contract. You don't have to go through anything. The money funded for the first milestone will automatically go back to the client. You will not need to leave any kind of public review.
If a contract ends without any money paid by the client to the contractor, then there is no way for anybody's reviews to appear on either the client's public profile page or the contractor's.
One contract that you end without getting paid should not impact your Job Success Score negatively, but if you made a habit of doing something like this, and if there's a pattern relative to the total number of jobs you have, then your Job Success Score will certainly drop.

Thank you. I spoke to the client. I ended the contract. Hope everyhing will be fine.

Hi preston
is this still working because i read this from petra lately in 2020
" Contracts that end with nothing paid and no (private) feedback *DO* affect the JSS "

re:"is this still working because i read this from petra lately in 2020: 'Contracts that end with nothing paid and no (private) feedback *DO* affect the JSS'"
Mahmoud:
This has changed.
We previously DID talk about zero-pay contracts having a negative impact on JSS.
But Upwork HAS CHANGED the way it calculates JSS. Upwork now states that zero-pay contracts DO NOT negatively impact JSS unless the client leaves negative private feedback.

I got it
But will this ended contract (with nothing paid) count on the minimum requirement needed to reach the first JSS?
Regards

Hi Mahmoud,
Aug 21, 2021 09:29:46 AM by Mahmoud s
Yes thank you for the reply Nikola
But I am talking about the contracts with $0 earned and (NEGATIVE) feedback
It is included in calculating JSS we know that
I am asking does it also included on the count of min requirment needed for getting first JSS
on other words would it be then one of the
4 (or more) different contracts within 24 months
My regards

Hi Mahmoud,
I'd like to reiterate that zero-pay contracts with negative feedback can have an impact on your JSS and also count towards the number of contracts needed to obtain a score.
