Same thing happened for me too when I tried with work email.
Try to change your email to personal email and you receive verification email from upwork for future updating on your profile

Thak you for your reply. But I cannot log onto my accont to change the email address. When I type in my email address as my username, which I normally do it tells me it is the incorrect username.
