Client Has Hired Me, But His Job Posting Still Accepts New Freelancer Proposals - Are They Wasted?

A new (and excellent, by the way) client hired me five days ago.

I am still seeing his job posting, which allows other freelancers to submit proposals.

What mechanism or policy does Upwork have in place that prevents freelancers from wasting time and connects on projects where a freelancer has already been hired and the client has decided no more freelancers are required for their project?

This is on purpose Will I guess..

freelancers are shown that there is 1 hire already. So they probably won't submit a proposal. Clients are also reminded to make the choice of making the job post invisible or closing it.

I think that's probably true, Alper, but if that's the case I'd like "Number of HIres" to be part of the search algorithm I design when I am looking for new projects. I'd like to be able to exclude from my search posted projects that already have 1 hire, if I know that Upwork does nothing to encourage clients to close (or pause?) their new project postings after they have hired the number of freelancers they are looking for.

I see no reason to waste time, effort and money on projects where the client is not actively looking for freelancers.

I think Upwork usually has that in place to be able to allow clients explore futher, In case the already hired freelancer seems Incompetent, they can easily opt for those people. Also clients might need to hire multiple freelancers due to volume of the project Upwork wants it to be very easy for them to do so.

If that's the logic then Upwork should allow (require?) clients to pause their job postings if they have already hired the freelancers they need but want to unpause postings where the freelancer initially engaged turns out not to be the right freelancer for the job.

You see..... I believe Upwork is running a business too, and the more connects we spend, the more their profit.

So I am not sure they can change that. Our best shot as freelancers is to simply provide as much as possible comfort for clients so they won't want to check for other freelancers who might even in some cases not be as expert or experienced as they claimed

I agreed. In somecases this may happen.

FL can always see if the client already hired someone, as well as the number of applied, interviewed, etc. If they choose to still apply, then they bear the risk of wasting their connects

Them wont risk. Them will waste it for sure.

Will, such connects wont refunded anyway. Only 2 cases for refund: client closed job himself without hiring and job deleted for ToS violation.

Upwork is dealing with freelancers dishonestly if Upwork knows freelancers are wasting time and money on connects submitting proposals on jobs where the client is not actually intending to hire more than one freelancer.

It's no different than a gas station charging a customer for more gasoline than the customer actually puts in his car.

Turning a blind eye to allowing useless/wasted proposals is not a good or fair business practice. It's desperate; not good or fair.

In a perfect world it would be. But as I believe you know, Upwork never made a profit by only doing good business practices. They only managed to become profitable after doing various trickeries, shifting the vision into "let us just sell the perception of opportunity",  at least for some part of their new visions

And if we think about it, some millions of freelancers who mostly would just roam Upwork’s servers contributing to costs without adding any profit from project fees, "deserves" the trickery from Upwork's profit-oriented perspective.

As for the rest, the normal freelancers, I think all they can do now is only to become more careful.

As everyone said. The client hired someone, Post will be closed and stopped to receive the Freelancer's proposals. However, in some situations, Clients who want to test the Freelancer, don't close the post or tick "Hired" immediately. So, I usually don't send Proposals, spend Connects for the Posts that show "Hired" or "Hires"

"Hires" --> means the Client had Freelancer work jobs but it hasn't been a final decision. As I understand it.

Even I see Client interview many Freelancers or invite many Freelancers to interview, I also don't send Proposals and waste Connects.

This is my of view.

Duong L.

You say, "The client hired someone, Post will be closed and stopped to receive the Freelancer's proposals."

Who closes the job posting - the client, the client with Upwork's encouragement, Upwork automatically, other?

And where did you get the information that "Hires" means "it hasn't been a final decision"? If that's true, what public information do you recommend the freelancer look for to know when the client has made "a final decision"?

Hi Will,

I only share things I have experienced going through.

"Who closes the job posting - the client, the client with Upwork's encouragement, Upwork automatically, other?"
--> I think the Client acts closing post with Upwork's encouragement. I only see results.

"And where did you get the information that "Hires" means "it hasn't been a final decision"? If that's true, what public information do you recommend the freelancer look for to know when the client has made "a final decision"?"

--> Keywords "Hired" or "Hires" appear in the item "Activity on this job" . And "Hired" mean all things closed.
I have ever seen one Client hired one Freelancer and paid already money per hourly, but he hasn't yet closed post, and his post activity on that job show keyword "Hires", not "Hired". So I think "Hires" mean Client hasn't yet made final decision, the Clients want to test Freelancer (probation period). The Client may be continue to recieve Proposals, and Post hasn't yet closed. So, I ignore these jobs, don't waste of Connects. Continue looking for other jobs.

Connection is money, so I keep a close eye on the situations, I see it. I'm not rich, sometimes I earn not enough money to buy Connects If I waste them. 😅

Rakib H.,

If you are looking for work, no one here can help you. You should look at Upwork's documentation about how this site works.

And don't be throwing around your contact information. That is not allowed prior to signing a contract with a client.
