Conversation archived, can't message freelancer

I have just agreed on the terms of a job with a freelancer but the conversation has suddenly been archived – although he can still message me, I can't. If I look at his profile, I get the message that I am "not able to purchase with this account". I have seen that other people  encountered this problem but it was always solved through a support ticket – I don't see the option of setting one up anymore.

OK, I've discovered I've been blocked until my identity is verified, which may take 2 days or more. But the person I was talking with received no automatic message to notify him, he must think I ghosted him 😕

As a freelancer, I always received a temporary message from Upwork; just doesn't provide the details.
