First Time Client

Hi!

I am a (potential) First Time Client. I have read many items/topics on the site and am experiencing info overload and find myself confused about the process. Can someone tell me how Upwork "works" for clients - focusing on the questions below?   

1. How are intereviews handled? Email, Upwork Messaging? Is there a safe way to talk by phone?

2. If freelancer or agency selected, how is web content shared with them?

If further developing an existing site, is it acceptable to get an email address for the freelancer to create a temporary password for them so that they can work on already existing site?

3. When does billing start?

4. How is payment handled?  

I believe these 4 questions should help me get started.
