I usually do offer free demo project to my clients even when they didn't request for it. I simply do it to save them money and time. That way, they hire me to make some finishing touches as they have been able to figure out that I can perfectly deliver their required quality.

I believe lots of clients does that too. You might need to highlight on the project description.

Good luck!

You really shouldn't.

By offering FREE work you don't value yourself nor the rest of freelancers.

Aim higher. That is where the target is.

Hi Antun,

I am quite new to with less portfolios that can convince some clients.

Let me get something straight, when I said FREE DEMO I didn't mean something that can be used right away by the client. The DEMO would still require finishing touches. The most important thing it does, is passing the right impression that I AM CAPABLE OF HANDLING THE CLIENT'S JOB.

Sometimes put yourself in this Client's shoe, it's not about giving you money yeah, I know you worked for it). But they are also after a goal to "save time, money, and grow their business"

Now tell me how the person will be able to achieve that when he or she hires a "**Edited for Community Guidelines** freelancer" with some unverified portfolios.

Just think it through. Nobody is asking anyone to do FREE work.

There is nothing wrong with cutting a small auction of an actual script. I have done auditions over the years some pan out some do not.
I would never do a whole script for people I do not know, unscrupulous clients can steal your work.

My portfolio is my free demo. 😉 My prospective clients can see exactly what I can do by looking at work I’ve done for other clients.

I'd like to post a job, but would like to be able to screen or audition candidates by getting them to perform a sample piece of audio. The requirements for the job is to get a voice impression of a known celebrity, so, being able to judge whether or not the person can "do" the role is of vital importance to the decision-making process. How is that handled? Within Upwork itself? Can we send messages and attachments during the screening/hiring process?

Once a job is agreed to by both parties, is payment handled through upwork?

How is that done?

First by listening to the samples in the freelancers portfolio (or links they attach to their proposal)

Then making a short list of freelancers you like

And then by PAYING them to send a sample of the impression you are looking for.

Finally hiring the one that stands out for you.

Asking for free work will get your account suspended. And ALL financial transaction MUST take place on this site. Otherwise, that also is a violation and will get your account suspended.

Not asking for free work. Just seeking for a way to find, with reasonable confidence, evidence that a prospective freelancer can perform the task. Any portfolio samples that aren't of the specific voice impression sought would be of little value. Id ask for a reasonable sample - but nothing that would actually be used as a finished product.

I sure hope the replies to this thread aren't representarive of the community as a whole. I'm just a guy trying to hire someone for a task, but my questions are being met with hostility and suspicion of ill intent. I have a long track record of paying artists for work at their quoted rates with prompt payment. Might need to seek elsewhere.

It's not hostility ... it's freelancers being a little sick and tired of clients asking for free work, getting free work, and then walking off into the sunset without spending a dime. It's epidemic ...some of it lies at the fault of clueless freelancers who don't know any better, or value their skill. It does read that you expect to be able to ask for a sample, and that qualifies as free work, which is against TOS.

Milton - it is very easy for you to get "evidence" from a freelancer that they can do your job. Post an RFP stating you will require a small PAID test, short list the profiles that stand out and that you've vetted as much as possible, and send offers to them to get to an interview stage.

Then be willing to pay a nominal sum for a freelancer's time and talent. There are plenty of freelancers here who can probably do what you need - the good ones expect to be paid for their time, no matter if it's one minute or 2 hours.

My 2¢.

Of course payment is through Upwork. Why don't you read the terms and conditions? **edited for Community Guidelines**

Hi Milton,

I apologise for the frustration this thread may have caused you, and if our team took long to reply to your question.

You will be able to communicate further with a freelancer if they send a proposal to your job, and you have responded to their proposal, or if you directly invite them to send you a proposal, and they have responded to your invite. Once you are able to exchange messages, you should be able to send attachments, and other pertinent files/information about the project during the screening or interview process.

We generally recommend freelancers not to work on free, test, projects which were requested by the client. Requesting for free test work is a violation of the Upwork Terms of Service, and I would recommend against it. I would suggest that you create a 'test' contract where you can pay the freelancer for the time they spent sending you a sample file, if you want to see whether a freelancer is the best fit for your job.

Once the job is agreed by both parties, you can hire the freelancer, and a contract will be automatically be created under your My Jobs page (Jobs > My Jobs).

Payment will be processed through Upwork, and you should learn more about paying for your freelancer's work by reading up on the help articles here.

Since you are new here, I would definitely recommend that you read up on the resources we have compiled here for both freelancers, and clients, to help you get started on Upwork. Let us know if you will also be interested to be connected to our Talent Specialists to help you short list freelancers for your project.
