Hiring a freelane writer. How to protect copyright?

I am attempting to hire a freelance writer. Does Upwork have any premade contracts or will I need to provide my own saying the the writer releases all claims to work, etc, etc?

re: "Does Upwork have any premade contracts?"

YES.

EVERY time a client hires a freelancer on Upwork, there is a contract in force. That is the DEFAULT Upwork contract, which stipulates that ALL rights to the work you hire a freelancer to create belong to YOU (the paying client).

You may read the contract here:

https://www.upwork.com/legal#optional-service-contract-terms

But you DON'T NEED TO READ IT if you don't want to.

You do NOT need to provide your own contract.

The DEFAULT contract already stipulates that the writer releases all claims to the work.

If you WANT to, you can provide your own contract. That is allowed.

But not necessary.
