How a freelancer found me on skype?

I've just posted a job and 2 minutes later someone knocked on my skype about that job. How on earth did he find me?

Rene, I mean seriously... He doesn't have my photo, there is no my name or skype in the job post. How this is possible?

I will never do that Smiley Tongue but If i would have been that freelancer i would search your name, picture in facebook, google data and mostly people are found that way.

There are many ways, actually.

I can tell you most of them but the usuals include:

1. Company name in the job post -> Locate owner of site/company -> Search for person's social media stuff -> identify a common "username"

2. Feedback from previous freelancers include names

3. After submitting the proposal, the freelancer gets to know the client profile's "company" and owner which in this case is your real name, I assume.

Vladimir had pointed out to me that in my prev job posting I had my full name at the end of the job. I think that is how he managed to find me, because he could not find me by photo - it is not shown on job posting. He now knocked on the Linkedin also. So annoying...

I've luckily never had that happen, although both my first and last name have been used by freelancers in their reviews of me on past jobs. So an enterprising person could theoretically find me on Skype or LinkedIn. Hmm. I wonder if that's where some of the random invites come from.

Out of interest, if there's a mod around reading this - if I wanted to request that a previous freelancer feedback which uses my last name is changed just to switch that to my first name (i.e. not changing the actual feedback, just my name), would Upwork do that? Or would I need to ask the freelancer to do it?

 Jennifer,

If feedback violates your privacy, please let CS know and they'll assist you with that.

Thanks, Valeria!

Giorgi, please report the freelancer, by name, to CS and to Valeria via PM as she is aware of the issue.

Invasions of privacy such as this are not acceptable!

How is it an invasion of privacy? LOL It's Skype not peeping inside your windows. jeez so melodramatic.

My own mother and siblings don't have my Skype ID. And they're all wonderful. I think they're great. But I don't want people pestering my on Skype. So you can imagine how much I frown on strangers trying to contact me.

Definitely inappropriate. I can't imagine it is an effective way to get somebody to hire you.

I don't hire people who IM ("Instant Message") me here in the Forum, and I certainly wouldn't hire somebody who contacted me via Skype, even if they do so in response to an actual job posting I post on Upwork.

The funny thing is he also found me on facebook ๐Ÿ™‚ So he messaged me everywhere where possible: skype, linkedin, facebook. Will report him now. I wonder why on earth he contacted me saying that he is well established on upwork while he had not applied for the job directly! Sure that is not a drama, but a little bit annoying.

LOL Don't make a case on him for freelance harassment. Btw you must report him for the inappropriate behavior.

Jennifer M - it is inappropriate because Upwork is intentionally framed to give clients anonymity until and when the client opts to contact a specific individual.

Surely you know this?????

Jennifer isn't shy

Maybe he was trying to get the project outside of Upwork. Not only a breach of the TOS but also a breach of professional ethics.

When I was consulting in the real world consulting companies would call about a contract the had with a client. They usually didn't tell who it was but they had to give at least tell you the basics of the project and the location. After years of working within this area I could make an educated guess as to the client. It would have been easy to tell the consulting company that I wasn't interested, contact their client myself, and make a lot more money. That would be unprofessional as well as ruining my reputation. Not worth it in my opinion.
