How can I get more work on Upwork?
Aug 30, 2024 04:48:17 PM Edited Aug 30, 2024 04:53:50 PM by Anthony H
Apply to more jobs. In some ways looking for work is a numbers game. You have, more or less, the same skills as 1 million other people. So, certainly, you will get jobs ... but you won't get any more jobs than anyone else, because you don't have any special skills to offer.
T.C. Williams, who comments a lot on these forums, always says "UPGRADE YOUR SKILLS." He is perfectly correct. One way to stand out is to find out the very, very latest, newest, most advanced options in your field and offer them before anyone else does. Find the very, very latest computer application. Study it until you can work it in your sleep. Advertise your new skill. That's one way to stand out.
Or ... find something you do nobody else does. This does not have to mean stand on your head and juggle eggs. Maybe you're the only graphic designer who speaks two different languages ... that's different. Maybe you're a graphic designer who specializes in sports websites -- there ya go. That makes you different.
Be different. After a while, if you specialize in something (sports or art or retail or fishing or cars or fashion) you will become a real expert in a very specialized niche. That's another way to be or sound different. Suddenly all the fashion website owners are looking for you (instead of the other way around) because you are the best in the world at fashion websites. It certainly pays off to spend less time looking for jobs and more time actually working -- don't you think?
Just sitting on your hands is not going to work. Complaining won't help, either. The way to seperate yourself from the pack is to specialize. You have to choose a specialty and make it stick.

Hello Anthony,
Thank you for your valuable feedback and insights. I truly appreciate your perspective on standing out in the competitive landscape.
I understand the importance of continuous skill development and specialization. I’m always committed to learning and keeping up with the latest advancements in my field to offer the most current solutions to my clients. I also strive to refine my niche and focus on areas where I can offer unique value.
Regarding my current situation, I have a strong profile with good ratings and have successfully completed numerous projects for my clients, I'm currently not receiving responses from clients despite applying to many jobs and spending a lot of connects.
My portfolio and work experience are solid, so I'm unsure why this is happening. Could you please offer some guidance on what I might be doing wrong or how I can improve my chances of landing projects?
Best regards,
Deepika

I understand this experience, it seems Upwork algorithm kind of swings around, cause after applying for jobs, the client will check the proposals sent and somehow will not still see the one sent, and I will wondering what is really happening.
What I have decided to do now is to leverage my previous clients, by sending them a greeting and ask if they have new project they need my services on, and at least I have gotten a few positive feedbacks and new offer from the existing clients, while I work on adding more to the clients I want to work with.
I'm actually looking forward to getting in touch with enterprise clients, so all these connects spending will stop.
I feel if you can reach out to your old clients, you might get a few gigs from them as well.

Thank you so much. These things will be helpful for many Freelancers.
Thanks a lot again.
God bless you, and your family.

Hi MD I agree with Anthony. Keep applying but also make sure you can do the job you are applying for. Show the potential client some work you have already done and try to create a detailed summary of your skills that you can put into your introduction text of your proposal.

Hello Shafayeth,
I wanted to share a quick tip that’s helped me on Upwork. I recently started boosting my profile, and since then, I've been receiving many more invites, including some with great hiring potential. You might want to consider boosting your profile too—it could help you attract more opportunities.
I hope this advice helps you get more work on Upwork!
Thanks and best regards,
Kulwinder

Hello Kulwinder,
I hope you're doing well.
I wanted to ask about the steps involved in boosting a profile, as it requires the use of connects. Given that we’ve already expended a considerable amount of connects on bids, the availability badge, and other features with little to no return, I’m curious to know if boosting the profile is genuinely effective or if it’s just another way to deplete our connects.
Looking forward to your insights.
Best regards,
Deepika

In recent times, Upwork has been saturated with several fake and bot driven accounts, so many clients have had bad experience with several of those freelancers. I remember sometimes back someone contacted me that he wants to buy Upwork profile, and I'm like I am python developer, what has that got to do with my services. I had to turn him down because what they do is to buy profiles, defraud clients and then chase away potential clients from the platform, thus weakening the marketplace.
It will be a major success if Upwork can roll out new verifications for all the accounts, that way several accounts will be fished out of the system and sanitize the pool.

Hi Miracle,
Thank you for sharing your experience. Would you happen to still have information about the individual who requested to buy your account? If so, please send me a private message and I'll be happy to report them to our team for investigation.

I'll give you a piece of advice that most people are going to baulk at:
The companies that win... aren't often the best.
That product that dominates the market... isn't often the best.
The freelancers who have steady work... aren't usually the best at what they do.
I'm not saying the companies who win, the products that dominate, or the freelancers who have steady work aren't all solid, stable, and good, but "winning" isn't often about being the best in the business world.
They win because they stand out; they know the right people; they're first to market; they sell themselves and their products better than others. Remember, novelty wears off and buzzwords go out of date, but using the right words to grab attention and sell someone on the benefits of this product or service, you, or your company is WAY more powerful than being or having the best product.

It's true.
I always state to have in-demand skills and be able to sell to be successful on Upwork.
