How to reject work?

I hired someone for a writing job, but the article they submitted is completely unusable to me, and technically incorrect in many places. I want to save to and fro and reject the work without going through Request Changes. Is there any direct way please?

How much money for how many words are we talking about?

• The easiest way is to pay and then close the contract with appropriate feedback.

• The next easiest way would be to tell the freelancer that you are very unhappy with the work and don't believe it can be rectified. The freelancer might choose to end the contract their end, which would release the funds back to you. Or you could offer to pay a part of the agreed price.

• The (only) other option would be to cancel the contract at your end, requesting a return of your escrow funds.  If the freelancer agrees, you get the escrow funds back, but if the freelancer disputes, the whole thing becomes time consuming as that would open an official dispute mediation process.

Not every freelancer/client match-up is a good fit.

Not every writer on Upwork has the right style or sufficient skill for every writing task. That is reality.

When a client hires writers, the results may be usable. The results might not be usable. If a writer produces glaringly unusable work, it is typically not worth my time as a client to mentor or coach that writer to help her improve her skill. That's not the reason I hire freelancers on Upwork. I need to recognize that this was a failed hire.

Effective, experienced clients who hire a lot of inexpensive writers know this. These clients evaluate all of the work submitted by the freelancers they hire. When they see great work, they make note of those freelancers and continue to hire those freelancers for new work. When they see work they can't use, they pay for the work, and then don't use the work. They make a note of those freelancers so that they can be sure to NOT work with those freelancers again.

Thanks much, Petra. I think I'll go ahead with the "next easiest way" you outlined. That seems the best option as I'm looking to save time in the first place.

Hi Petra, I have a scenario where I am in contract with a freelancer to recover my instagram account. We agreed on a price and the contract was legally binding - He`s now demanding more money and isnt doing the work unless I send him more money (which I wont since the contract and fixed rate fee was already agreed) It`s been almost a week since I hired him and I want to prosecute him for breach of contract , refusal to complete work under contract - what do you recommend

If the freelancer refuses to work and funds are kept in escrow, you can close the contract and a refund request will automatically be initiated. Your freelancer will be given seven days to respond to the refund request.
