Marketing Specialist or Artist

Need to post for uncertain position- either artist or marketing specialist to help design a 1-page graphic and artistic ad primarily for print but could be used digitally. What initial position am I looking for knowing it could evolve more towards marketing? Thanks

If you have work for a graphic artist and a marketing specialist, then why are you trying to create a single job post?

Rather than hiring a freelancer who is a mediocre graphic artist and a mediocre marketing specialist...

...wouldn't it be better to hire a good graphic artist and a good marketing specialist?

(2 different people)

Preston,

Many graphic designers work collaborately with marketing directors - I did for years when I was still in the brick and mortar world. There's no need to assume or suggest mediocrity.

Virginia:

I agree with you.

What you are saying here is exactly my point.

Graphic designers work with marketing directors.

But they're not the same person.

The original poster said he wanted to hire somebody who was a marketing "specialist" (his word) AND a graphic designer. The original poster's own post expresses ambiguity about whether he should be hiring a graphic artist OR a marketing specialist, OR someone who is both, OR two different people.

By definition, a specialist is somebody who focuses on one area of specialization, not somebody who offers all needed services to a particular client.

"Mediocre" is not a judgement about any particular freelancer's skill set. It is simply the defined implication of the skill level of a generalist relative to a specialist.

Is this a brand-new product or service?

Hi C,

A traditional service, but "boxed" presented and implemented in a unique fashion to different dimensions of the client base using that  uniqueness that require additional creativity in the hopes of initial "captivation" (?).

You'll want a graphic designer to do your print ad, which can also be saved as a digital ad. If you have an idea of what you want to say in the ad to your target market, you only need suggestions regarding marketing/ad copy/headline/tagline.

I'm going to suggest that you don't need a marketing director, but perhaps a copywriter. I help clients out with copy quite often. Some graphic designers have marketing experience, some don't, so you could put wording to that effect in your RFP: "marketing experience a plus".

That's my 2¢.
