Trialing Video Editors

Hi all,

How do I go about trialing multiple people for a long term youtube video editor role? If, for example, I have shortlisted it down to 4 editors, do I have to initiate 4 contracts just to pay for a trial? I don't really want to pay 4 contract initiation fees when I will only be going with 1 of them going forward.

So what is the best and most cost effective way of trialing editors? Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Tom

Not at all. Most of us (clients and freelancers) have had long-term projects with earnings/payments in $$$$ or even $$$$$ that  started with a small trial job.

Tom,

You'll have to pay everybody for their work, trial or not, which means that you'll have to initiate contracts with all of them.

Thanks Natasa. Of course, I was never suggesting I would not pay people for their work. It was the upwork contract iniation fees, but I will stomach 4 contract initiation fees.

If I am looking for a long term editor and want to pay them per video, how do I keep one contract open? Do I just add a milestone for each video?

Thanks again,

Tom

Yes, you can keep a job open indefinitely by adding milestones.

Add a mid-way review after a month or two of working with your editor.

Thank you Rekha, that is really helpful. Does it matter if the milestones add up to more than the original agreed fixed amount?

Best wishes,

Tom

Thank you so much for your help. I feel confident I know what I am doing now. I'll do a full fixed amount each for the trial, and then then for the successful applicant I will use milestones to pay for weekly videos.

You're welcome.

You can create milestones in batches and fund them as and when required.

Please, don't forget to check the finished work/deliverables to ensure changes are done to your satisfaction, and to release milestones on time.

Hope you find the perfect video editor.

One thing to add to this is that when creating a milestone if you add a due date to the milestone the freelancers do not get reminders of when the due date is so just make sure that they are clear when the deadline is for each milestone. Also add the specs for the the video as well eg if its 720p or 1080p etc.  The way you have gone about it is a good way eg gets lots of people to apply then make a shortlist and get them to agree to do a trial first.

Thanks for these valuable insights! By implementing these improvements, we can streamline the project workflow, enhance communication with freelancers, and ultimately achieve the best possible results for the video project.
