I have entered my credit card details and they are completely correct however upwork won't accpet them but does not give a reason why. I am attemppting to hire someone at the moment and it won't allow me to do so without adding my payment method.

Toby, is your card a prepaid card by any chance? Those are not accepted.

I am having the same problem. But my card is not a prepaid card. I have tried a Mastercard credit card, Visa credit card, and Visa Debit card. It doesn't seem to recognize the card number, expiration date, or code number.
