What's the best way to post a job with a fee per record structure?

If you're posting a web research or data entry job, and you want to pay a fee per item, how exactly do you indicate this in a job posting?

In case what I'm asking isn't clear, let's say you have a job where you want folks to build a list of beverage industry executives and their e-mail addresses.  For each beverage executive and e-mail address, you want to pay a certain amount, e.g. $0.10.  This obviously wouldn't be an hourly rate project.  But it also wouldn't really be a fixed fee project, since the amount the freelancer can early will vary depending on how many executives they find.  So I'm a bit confused about how to present this in the project description.

You have two broad choices:

- Use Upwork

- Use another platform

If you use Upwork, you are required to use one of Upwork's available payment methods, or a combination thereof:

- hourly contract

- fixed-price contract

- weekly stipend ("salary")

- bonus payments

Any of these that fits your needs is permissible, as long as you work within Upwork's rules.

But you are correct that Upwork does NOT have a SPECIFIC user-interface module for clients to set up payments based precisely on your situation.

The closest would be to use the fixed-price contract, which MANY clients have successfully used in similar situations.

It is not completely clear to me why you do not think you can set up a fixed-price contract for a specific number of records.

(For example: set up a fixed-price contract to pay $5.00 for 50 records.)

Presumably that $ 0.10 per lead is a typo....

That sort of contract can very successfully be run as fixed rate contracts. Just set a (realistic rather than slave labour) price per lead and then set milestones of each 50 leads or 100 leads etc. - fund milestones to that and release them when your freelancer delivers the required number of leads.

Thanks!  So the fixed fee doesn't necessarily mean the fixed fee for the entire job, but can mean a fixed fee per milestone within the job?  That's confusing and Upwork should really have a better way of going about this!  How do you then indicate the milestone level that needs to be accomplished for each fixed fee?  And can you negotiate on and update these terms once freelancers and agencies reach out to you regarding the project?

re: "So the fixed fee doesn't necessarily mean the fixed fee for the entire job?"

Correct.

re: "...but can mean a fixed fee per milestone within the job?"

Yes.

re: "How do you then indicate the milestone level that needs to be accomplished for each fixed fee?"

The fixed-price contract job lets you specify a task, and a dollar amount.

re: "And can you negotiate on and update these terms once freelancers and agencies reach out to you regarding the project?"

Yes.

NOTHING YOU PUT in the job description counts when it comes to creating the actual contract.

You can change everything.

When a freelancer applies to your job posting, that is simply the beginning of a conversation.

If a job posting helps you find a freelancer that you want to work with, you can even scrap the entire job posting - just ignore it - and create a brand new PRIVATE job posting that you invite that same freelancder to apply to, or which you use to send the freelancer a DIRECT HIRE offer. You don't need to use the same terms, desription, job title... everything can be changed based on your conversation with the freelancer.

Got it.  Where in the job description does it let you specify a task?  I only recall seeing one box for the fixed price.
