how to protect the work received is not plagiarized and own full rights

Hello There,

I am looking to hire freelancers to formulate a Vocabulary Database for an App that I am developing.

I supply some words, and the freelancer should provide the details.

Example Word that I supply: conscientious

What do I want? I need two pieces of information from the freelancer.

First One: Word Definition

Meaning: Thorough, careful, or vigilant; implies a desire to do a task well.

"meaning": "Thorough, careful, or vigilant; implies a desire to do a task well..",

"pos": "ADJECTIVE",
"usage": "a conscientious man, he took his responsibilities very seriously"
"synonyms": ["diligent","industrious", "scrupulous", "painstaking"],
"antonyms": ["casual", "careless", "cutthroat", "dishonest"]

Second: Questions related to the word

"conscientious:ANTONYM": {
    "question": "conscientious",
    "questionType": "ANTONYM",
    "word": "/words/conscientious",
    "answer": "casual",
    "options": ["meticulous", "casual", "painstaking", "scrupulous"],
  },
  "conscientious:MEANING": {
    "question": "conscientious",
    "questionType": "MEANING",
    "word": "/words/conscientious",
    "answer": "diligent",
    "options": ["careless", "immoral", "diligent", "lax"],
  },
  "conscientious:SYNONYM": {
    "question": "conscientious",
    "questionType": "SYNONYM",
    "word": "/words/conscientious",
    "answer": "virtuous",
    "options": ["immoral", "nefarious", "cutthroat", "virtuous"],
 }

I have almost 3000 thousand words. I need the freelancer's original work not copied and glued it from the internet as the data is copyrighted and I will be in big trouble if a freelancer used available material on the internet. It should be an original work. I want to protect my business from future law suites of plagiarism and copyright issues.

  1. How can I protect myself and my business in this instance?
  2. How can I draft my work proposal so that it will show who would liable?
  3. How can I keep the rights to the data produced by the freelancer?
  4. What else I need to look for potential pitfalls?

Please answer.

1. Hire a great freelancer with a long history of successful contracts, a high JSS and pay that freelancer well.

2. As the publisher of the app ultimately you are liable.

3. You own those rights automatically on Upwork unless something else was agreed (assuming that the freelancer actually produced the word).

4. Don't hire cheap. Spotcheck work frequently for plagiarism. Be aware, however, that there is a finite number of synonyms for a word and taking them from available sources is obviously not plagiarism. Nobody knows all synonyms or antonyms of words. So the same words will appear in sources as appear in your app.

Be aware that what you are planning will work out rather expensive if done right.

Many thanks for the clear and concise answer @petra R. I appreciate your time and effort to provide a details answer.

Have a good weekend.
