Hey Upwork Community,
It took me six months to land my first job on Upwork. It was a tough journey, especially when your growth depends on something specific and no results are showing. You often feel inferior to others and consider quitting. In my opinion, this journey is about learning and earning; losing is simply not a term in freelancing.
How I Landed My First Job:
I sent out over 100 proposals for jobs that were well within my skill set, but guess what? I received an invite! My client saw one of my portfolio pieces and became interested in hiring me. I used to think I could improve my portfolio once I got my profile going, but that day I realized that creating an attractive portfolio can be incredibly helpful from the start. To be honest, we will all improve our profiles over time, so why not do it all at once and save time?
I know itโs challenging to create a perfect profile right away, especially without prior experience, but you can certainly try your best. If you feel satisfied with your profile, youโll be ready to go.
Creating a catalog with samples of your own work will help clients understand what they are looking for and what you are capable of providing. Sometimes clients may not even realize that certain things can be done until they see your work. Always strive to make your work easy to access for your clients; they may know how to get things done but might lack the time or motivation to do so themselves. Make your project as automated as possible.
Instead of using the same template for every proposal, try to write a new one for each job. Use the client's own words to demonstrate that you have carefully read their job description and are serious about the project. Communicate professionally and negotiate so they understand that you are not desperate for the job.
I believe that by following these strategies, you can secure your job. The Upwork community operates like a family, always willing to support one another. Feel free to ask me any questions, and please add any extra insights you might have!
