There's a pretty active Upwork group in Reddit already.

OK, but who moderates the Reddit forum, where do my data end up, and why should I share my thoughts with people who may have absolutely no interest in the wellbeing of Upwork?

Upwork has nothing to do with Reddit. If you have concerns of what other platforms may do with your data, I would recommend reviewing their policies and the moderators of that company. As for why you would want to do any of that, I’m not sure anyone but you can answer that.

To answer your question - Andrea and me came up with the labels. We like labels.

Oh how i hate ads - they have become being meaningless and sometimes just make things down right awkward. I dont know if this only happpens to me but i could be checking my email (i use microsofts live) and on the right hand side, for no reason - Alibaba is flashing me lingerie - with no explaination as to why its relevant to what i am doing.

Alibaba is flashing me lingerie - with no explaination

Lingeries ads targets both sexes.

But it's also true that marketplaces have data of our browsing behavior, that may be taken from other sites as well, that could make a man sees more lingeries ads than another 😁

Yes, creepy Google that follows me everywhere.

I look up a ceramic pot for photography on Amazon and the brand ad follows me on all sites that use Google Adsense. So much so, I am forced to click on the ad and tell it to stop playing in loop everytime I scroll down a post or article, that it's bugging me, and begging it to go show something else for a change.

I think it shows the same thing often as I have restricted the type of ads or industries in my account settings.

If only God has taken a Google Masterclass on being omniscient and omnipresent, the world would be a much happier place, me 🤔.

It's not actually Google's fault, but the pot brand put a "marker" on you with "Amazon's help" so they can "find" you anywhere, not just with AdSense 😁

Yes we can easily assume that Google is the one who knows the most of our browsing behavior but they actually trying to deal with the "problem". There's a notice in Chrome console for months, that it will block 3rd party cookies at the end of the year. It's now the end of the year so we'll see.

Google work with this initiative.

I don’t think this article was fully true at the time but this is true nowadays. It’s a fun read though on creepy advertising https://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/02/16/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-...

I think it was true. I remember one of my ecomm clients selling custom baby rompers sending me this link and wishing he had the money to install such a system.

I found it creepy back then, and instantly lost respect for him.

I don't exactly see it as creepy. I guess it's similar with how I see Upwork, where they're selling "perception of opportunity" which as we can see is perceived as evil or even crime to some, while  I 'understand' it's just 'for profit' and will just take care of myself.

And btw. we can see the dad in the story apologize at the end, and who knows if he might be 'amazed' with the system as well, like the baby rompers seller 😅

I'm not sure about the legality or privacy policy related to the "smart advertising", but I do agree that people should be allowed to choose if they don't want to be part of it.

When it comes to the internet specifically, some people might already always browse in incognito mode, or clearing everything after each session (Ravindra? 😁), where what that Privacy Sandbox & Google attempting to do now is to still allow the tracking technology instead of 'removing' it (because it has other, ethical uses) while making the users more informed and have control.

Upwork seeking profits with decidedly (for us) inappropriate means is a different issue. At least it is not tracking us in this sleazy, stealthy way.

We didn't ask for this kind of all-pervading tech. Why should a random company know whether I am pregnant, sick, dieting, or anything else?

Yes, these interconnected systems are convenient and make life easier at times, but I prefer to retain control, not let it poke its nose into my affairs or decide for me.

I grew up in an era with no internet (I had to attend a paid private course while in college to learn to use a Windows PC that worked on Dos, with other languages BASIC with a hint of COBOL or something, and accounting and office applications). Offices were getting computerised and an aspiring analyst/auditor/ accountant had to know the basics. I got hands-on experience on a bunch of software including ERP during my 3-year articleship/internship.

No mobiles phones either. The cordless phone was a cool achievement for the late 80s teen in Mumbai.

Infact, our first home pc was an assembled peice. You had companies back then that let you pick and choose various parts of the hardware and software. I and my bro chose different brands for different parts, I even opted for a Benq DVD drive. Sadly, those companies are gone now, except maybe in small towns.

Big companies destroyed that token of individualism.

It wasn't that our lives were missing something without constant interaction, calls,  or endless scrolling through social media.

You actually spoke to people face-to-face and hung out with friends, had hobbies, and found ways to be creative with fewer options (jugaad as Indians call it).

The online world has its advantages -- creative jobs and for a shy-introvert like me, the ability to work with people without the noise, clutter, small talk, and office politics.

"Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner, but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
And here's an autograph for your brother, I wrote it on a Starter cap"
