How does it happen that I get invited to jobs that involve writing movie and TV scripts? What is there on my profile that could possibly make a client, or UW, or perhaps UW's algorithms think that I am even remotely qualified to write scripts of any kind?
I find it very difficult to believe that any client who is even halfway serious about his job posting would read my profile and think- "Aha, this guy is a mechanic, and since he works only in the automotive niche, he must be a brilliant script writer as well."
This leaves me with the thoughts that Upwork either recommended me to the last two clients who wanted scripts written, or, there are keywords in my profile that might lead a stupid algorithm to think that I can write movie scripts.
Can a moderator explain this? Or anybody...?

Hi Reinier,
I'm afraid only the client who invited you will be able to share an explanation, since we can't replicate the steps they've taken before sending the invite. I'd also be interested in getting the insight so I can confirm the steps the client has taken and their rationale for inviting you to their job.

Thanks Vladimir, but somehow I don't think clients purposely sought me out for these jobs.

I should be that lucky, but no, the first invite was to turn a stage play (a musical, to boot) into a movie script, and the second was to write 20 episodes of a comedic sitcom.
I will consider writing the script for Cars 4, though.

Kind of hard to take such an invitation seriously...
But if someone actually sent me an invitation to write a movie script for them, I would say yes, that I would be do it, as long as they paid me up front.

Well, Rowling was a secretary and King was a teacher and worked in laundry/janitorial services part-time. Don't sell yourself short!

Scott, it's not the creative writing bit that's the problem, because I've had several of my short stories published by respectable local publications.
What gets me is the fact that scripts have to be done with proper formatting software, which from what I have seen of them, requires one to go to school to learn how to use them, and who needs that?

See, the offer is not completely absurd. Reinier, you must have secret admirers of your short stories that have found out that they could contact you through Upwork. Lucky you! Congratulations!

I'm guessing it's those oh-so-knowledgeable "talent specialists" recommending you to clients. Because you know, they're always spot on with their recommendations.

I'm fuming about this issue as well. My invites are getting more and more ridiculous: first, one enquiring about my gut health; then, one looking for a mechanical engineer; and the latest, asking me to review a watch.
None of these keywords appear in my profile, so either the clients in question are incredibly lazy or stupid, or Upwork's algorithim has just escaped the asylum ... again.
