I Have a Question or Problem: Why Isn't My JSS Improving?

Hello everyone, I want to share my experience with the Job Success Score (JSS) on Upwork and ask for your advice.

I started my journey on the platform on the right foot. During the first two months, I received the Rising Talent badge, which helped me secure amazing contracts and clients. I never had a bad review or issues with my clients, but out of nowhere, my JSS dropped to 50%, and I lost my badge.

It was a tough blow, and although I tried to reach out to Upwork to understand what happened, all I received was a generic list about how the JSS works. With no clear answers, I decided to focus on moving forward. Thanks to the support of my clients, I managed to slowly raise my JSS, but it cost me many connects and lost opportunities.

Today, after a lot of effort, I’ve reached a 92% JSS. However, it seems to have plateaued for a while. Recently, a client left me an excellent detailed review and even a tip, but my JSS didn’t show any improvement.

My goal is to reach 100% and regain a badge that reflects the quality of my work. Has anyone else gone through this? What else can I do to continue improving my JSS? I appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. 😊

Hi Hasit!

Great job getting your JSS back up to 92%! That's a big achievement, especially after a drop.

Here are a few tips that might help you continue improving.

  • Focus on Long-Term Contracts-- Upwork tends to favor longer-term relationships and ongoing projects. Clients who keep coming back to you can positively impact your JSS.
    • Of note, the Pareto Principle (aka 80/20 rule) is that 20% of your clients will pay for 80% of your earnings. When businesses leverage this principle, focusing on their top clients is far more valuable for getting additional work. You may determine a rank of sorts based on earnings. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Private Feedback Matters-- Even if public reviews are good, private client feedback also affects JSS. Consider checking in with clients during projects to ensure they're happy with your work, which can encourage them to give positive private feedback.
  • Keep Track of Contracts-- Closed contracts without feedback can negatively impact your JSS. Try to encourage clients to leave feedback whenever a project ends.

Lastly, don't stress too much about reaching 100%. A JSS of 90%+ already makes you a top choice for many clients.

Wishing you the best of luck—you've got this!!
