Things to Do When Out of Work and Saving Last Few Connects for a Good Job

  1. Use neti pot to rinse nasal passages--again.
  2. Do hair and makeup (to pretend I don't work in sweats from Goodwill), then take glamour-shot selfies for a profile makeover.
  3. Make pros-and-cons list of self-employment, then make same of traditional jobs.
  4. Duolingo
  5. Brainstorm ways to cut food budget. ("Stop eating" doesn't work.)
  6. Empty Amazon shopping cart.
  7. Exercise. (I don't call what I do "working out.")
  8. Reexamine financial situation and upcoming bills.
  9. Locate adult beverages.
  10. Look for cheaper places to live.

Keep it going! (funny OR serious)

How could I have forgotten:

11. Make eBay pile and start selling.

I wonder if I could just throw all the junk I can live without into my spare room, take a pic, and auction the entire room.

  1. Collect stats on Upwork
  2. Collect more stats
  3. Find ways of getting the most out of the stats
  4. Read posts here in the Community
  5. Check RSS feed for new projects
  6. Post replies in controversial threads

Ha! This post is not against Upwork ... It's just like, "What do I do now?"

Sorry, but what do you mean by collecting more stats?

* Complain about the system and try to get a good laught at it with everyone else.

@ Beth,

I know it sounds strange, but that's what I do (for now) - collect stats. Job stats, hiring rates, feedback stats, JSS stats, & more.

What better is there to do. I need to find some more productive ways of biding time.

OMG, Beth! I like your list.

And how about coming back to these forums, identifying someone with a real serious issue, and telling them to stop whining and get back to work??? Ah nah... Won't help to play sadist...

Ha-ha, Mercy! Just don't try that with me; there's no work to go back to! LOL.

Seriously, I'm still hopeful. And I do keep busy with constructive things. And I realize I need to have more of a backup plan these days, since things aren't like they used to be. This thread is mostly for fun.

12. Take a class through Coursera

13. Wax entire body

14. Dream about auditioning for America's Got Talent

I make stock footage to sell, so that the next time I haven't got any work on, I've got a bit of residual income to keep me going on the rainy days. Then I make a bit more stock footage the next time, and I have a bit more residual income the next time... and so on and so forth.

I'm hoping to earn enough to just make stock footage by the end of the year, and enter a stage semi-retirement. It's looking promising!

@Scott, good for you! Yeah, I guess I never had that need for a backup plan for five years (even though I probably should have had one anyway). I'm just very limited by (1) a pesky back injury and (2) a pathological need to be alone. Doesn't make for great part-time job opportunities. Even at the Antarctic research stations, you need to be able to lift a certain amount of weight when the mail and supplies come in. I'm confident that I'll figure something out, though. A roommate would make things a lot easier, but ... yikes.

Beth,

A roommate could me it a lot worse too .. The idea of living with someone else just makes me shudder, but I am terribly private.

For your list

Collect all the junk you don't want in the house and put it on craigslist (no fees like ebay)

plant a garden

Do spring cleaning or project you keep putting off.

Look at alternatives to working at home besides finding another job.

Stand on your head and see how long it takes to feel woozy

Great list, Suzanne! Fun AND useful.

Yeah, roommate idea is only good for raw finances. Later mental health costs would outweigh the income. Woman LOL

"Later mental health costs would outweigh the income. "

I think that would be true of standing on your head as well..

Panda killed my residual writing income. ๐Ÿ˜ž

I write for 1 other place where it's basically an ecommerce store for people who want to buy content. I write a lot of hacking articles and they sell well. And they are fun to write.

I decided to try an ebook and an app. Ebook $0. App $16. yay

Start filling out surveys at a cent each......... Fold some laundry..... Do a few more surveys at a cent each....... Put away laundry....... A few more suveys...... Dust.... etc.

Literally LOL, Irene!

Things do while out of Work ?

1. Take two Job Skill Tests of the platform. Make sure you do well in one ( to feel good with yourself) and not so well in the other one (to remind yourself you are very human).

2. Ask yourself how you got into this fix - and promise your self it will never happen again (until the next time it happens).

3. Check your debtor's list and see who is due for a friendly reminder.

4. Finally Google 'ten most cheapest cities to live in the world' and start making neccesary arrangements if any fits the bill.

I hope this helps ?

I just want to sit and rot on a beach in Bali.

LOL @ debtor's list Oreofe. So true. I go through Elance jobs and say "OK, who needs to pay up."

@Oreofe.....I've googled the ten cheapest cities as well!!!!!!!!!.....But then I remind myself...can't speak those languages!

This never applies to me as I always have an abundance of connects it seems but...

What I do i general when lacking enough work is:

Try to double the amount I am learning each day or even revising old topics.

Spend a few hours a day playing various educational challenge websites like: Khan Academy, Codecademy, Codewars (they give you free profiles where you can show off your new skills...think of it like zero to HERO...!!), this includes doing all the free courses on Codeschool.   Read wikipedia each day.....example.....look up XKeyscore on wikipedia...lol.  Any person out there can learn to code right in the browser (no other tools needed) on these websites.  English was the language of the 20th century, Code is the language of the 21st century...there is code almost everywhere, in everything made almost.

Find some interesting software projects and then sign up to their developer mailing list (email).  Start some free Coursera courses.

Stop watching Netflix etc and watch some educational videos like -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMm0HsmOTFI

The key fact of of all the ramble is -> the more you learn the more you earn.   Which means read as much as you can, somtimes more than once to remember.

Another different thing I like doing is watching the job posts on Upwork (they all mention different skills) and then looking up the said mentioned skills to see what they are (if I haven't already heard of them)

Every day I learn something new (i forget most) but key things are picked up etc that add value in the long run instead of playing first person shooters or WOW etc.
