I tried two other popular freelancing sites before Upwork (but I won't mention their names).
The first only allowed clients to contact freelancers, which is ridiculous when you're competing with hundreds of other people. It's almost impossible to get noticed.
The second allowed freelancers to bid on projects, just like Upwork, but there were lots of vague, fake-looking ads. Over the course of several weeks, I never got a response from one person, not even a curious person.
On Upwork, I spend a lot of time browsing projects, but I get a few responses, and sometimes I even get hired. I'm not making a reasonable amount of money (yet?), but a few hundred dollars in 5 months is better than nothing.
(And I've only spent 12% of the money I've earned on "connects" to keep bidding on projects.)
Objectively, Upwork is better than nothing. That's a compliment, I guess.

If you don't compliment your girlfriend in the same manner, all's well.
Side note: don't end contracts yourself, let the client do it, so they have to give you feedback.

LOL! They should change their tagline.
"Upwork: It's better than nothing."
I like it. 🙂

I propose that about 95% of advertisers change their slogans to this one. It would make life so much easier.
