5 Amazing Morning Rituals for Freelancers

Once you become a freelancer, you're in charge of your own time. That’s a great spot to be in because you can organize your day however you like! However, that can also be a slippery slope, and it’s easy to overwhelm yourself with work and forget to take some time off.

Time off isn’t just a yearly vacation you take or the weekend that’s just around the corner. It’s a daily habit of zoning out of your work and listening to your needs. In this article, I’ll talk about five morning rituals that can help you live a more balanced life.

  1. Gratitude journal
  2. Morning pages
  3. Goals journal/written manifestation
  4. Breath work/breathing exercise
  5. Meditation

Without any further ado, let's get right into it!

Gratitude Journal

As an ambitious person, you set high goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them. Sometimes, while you strive for greatness, it can be easy to forget everything you already have and what you achieved. If you spend too much time on this downward spiral of dissatisfaction, it’ll have a negative impact on your productivity.

Through the act of writing a gratitude journal, you’ll slowly start to realize what you have. Each day, you’ll start seeing new things in your life that you’re grateful for. If you stick with this habit, over time this will become your regular state of mind, and you’ll be able to work on your goals with joy and excitement, and not with dissatisfaction and unfulfillment.

Morning Pages

Moving on with some more journaling! The next thing on our list is - the morning pages. This is a concept I found out about in the book called “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameroon (which is amazing, by the way! I recommend it to anyone who’s working on their creativity).

The concept is fairly simple - as soon as you wake up, take a pen and paper, and write down all the thoughts that come to your mind as you write. You shouldn’t be thinking about the content of it at all, just write. You don’t have to read it ever again, the goal is to just declutter your mind.

I love this technique because it helps me relax and calm down, and I even do it in the evening before sleep.

Goals Journal / Written Manifestation

One more journaling suggestion, I promise it’s the last one! With this technique, we’re gonna wake up our wildest dreams. Think of a goal you’re trying to achieve. Can you imagine it being accomplished in the best way possible? Write down this vision in as much detail as possible, and write it down as if it happened already.

For example: “Yesterday, I signed my biggest client so far! They reached out to me around a week ago, and I’m so happy that they did because they work in the X industry where I wanted to start working in… etc.”

Once you write down your goal in this way, think about the alternative ways in which you can achieve your goals and still be happy with the result, and write it down.

This technique will fire up your motivation to work, inspiration to try out new things, and the will to do the parts of your job you dread the most.

Breathwork / Breathing exercises

I told you we were done with journaling! The next thing on our list is one of my favorite techniques (who am I kidding? All of the things on this list are my favorite ones). Breathing exercises are a powerful technique that can boost your energy, reduce your anxiety, and help you with your productivity.

There are plenty of guided breathwork sessions on YouTube, lasting from 2 minutes up to 1 hour and even more. You can test some out, and find what floats your boat.

If you try some out, don’t forget to leave a comment below and let me know how it went!

Meditation

Last, but not least - it’s meditation! There’s no better way to start your day calmly than with meditation. If you want to move through your day with ease and calmness, then mediation might be the perfect solution for you.

Meditation can sometimes be similar to breathing exercises and the effect it has, but you can do it without doing some special sort of breathwork.

You sit upright, close your eyes, and breathe deeply and slowly. As you start relaxing, you should start paying attention to your body and whether you feel odd or tense in certain parts. Once you identify these feelings, breathe into them.

Notice the thoughts that come to you as you do this. Acknowledge them, let them go, and focus once again on your breath. You can do this for as long as you like (or have time for). You can do it with or without music. There are some guided meditations out there, but I prefer to do them without any sound.

Five morning rituals! Which ones do you already do, and which ones are you going to try out soon?
