A freelancers guide to earning more and working less

This guide will share tips and strategies for business growth, as well as advice on managing your time effectively and maximizing your earnings. Whether you want to increase clientele or streamline your business processes, this guide will help you reach your goals and succeed as a freelancer.

My name is Quincy Samycia; I am a brand strategist and brand identity specialist with more than 10 years of experience and expert-vetted on Upwork. I own a small boutique branding agency in Vancouver, Canada @The Branded Agency, and I share this with you so that you know I'm qualified to speak on this subject.

Whether you are just starting out as a freelancer or have been in the business for years, there are many things you can do to grow and scale your business. Some key strategies include marketing yourself effectively, staying up-to-date with industry trends, and building a strong network of contacts. Additionally, it is important to manage your time wisely and take care of yourself both physically and mentally. With these tips and strategies, you can earn more, work less, and be successful as a freelancer.

7 quick tips for growing your business in 2023

  1. Leverage social media to build your brand and reach a wider audience. Platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Tiktok, Instagram, and Twitter are great tools for connecting with potential clients and showcasing your work.
  2. Only share your best work; you don't need to show and share all of your work with potential new clients.
  3. Consider setting up a company blog or website to share your portfolio and promote your services through content marketing.
  4. Network with other professionals in your field, both online and offline. LinkedIn is a great place to network with business professionals.
  5. Set up a profile on platforms like Upwork, Dribbble, and Behance to build your connections, network and apply for jobs through these platforms.
  6. Attend relevant conferences and events, join industry groups on Facebook, Reddit, and LinkedIn, and reach out to other graphic designers for collaboration opportunities or referrals.
  7. Be proactive in marketing services, whether that means developing and distributing a brochure or flyer, creating personalized email campaigns, or writing guest blog posts for other websites in your industry.

By actively promoting yourself and your business, you will find more success in growing your client base and earning more clients.

Make yourself the expert in your industry

To truly grow your business and succeed as a freelancer, it is important to establish yourself as the go-to expert in your field. This means being visible online and sharing valuable insights with potential clients.

One effective strategy to gain authority and credibility in your industry is by consistently producing high-quality content. This could be in the form of a blog, e-book, video series, or webinar.

In addition to content creation, you can also share your expertise through speaking at conferences and events, writing guest posts for popular blogs or publications in your industry, and collaborating with other business professionals.

By positioning yourself as an expert in your industry, you will gain more recognition and business opportunities, as well as establish yourself as the go-to person for all of your clients' business needs.

Create and execute a PR strategy

Another key to success is to create and execute a PR strategy. Whether you are a one-person show or you have a team behind you, PR will help you gain credibility, attract more customers and grow your sales.

There are two main ways you can get PR for your business; you can try and reach out to journalists and editors directly and pitch them a story that aligns with their audience, or you can consider a paid media publication partnership.

Let's start with getting free PR; you'll need to be creative and create a "newsworthy" story. A digital magazine or news publication isn't just going to do a public profile on you unless you are already famous. So, how do you create a newsworthy story?

Here is an example of a press release I wrote for my previous company that generated over $500,000 in free PR for my business. @Activewear that doesn't stink, thanks to crab and shrimp shells. This press release got my business featured in Bloomberg business week, the daily mail, the daily planet, CNBC, CTV, and much more. The technology is called "Chitin" I could have just as easily said Activewear Company uses Nano Technology to make Clothing Not Smell, but that's not a "newsworthy" story.

Hopefully, this gives you an idea of how you can create your own unique message to get your business some free PR.

The other option is a paid media publication sponsorship. The pricing for this can vary quite dramatically; to be featured in Entrepreneur, Forbes, FastCompany, or Bloomberg, you may be looking anywhere from $20,000 - $50,000. For smaller local publications, the price may range from $2,500 - $10,000. The advantage of this strategy is that you can control the narrative of the story, you get to create the article yourself, link to specific landing pages, and have final approval before it's published. A pricing strategy to allow you to earn more and work less.

If you want to take your business to the next level and grow, you will need to adopt an effective pricing strategy.

One of the best ways to do this is by using a two-tier or tiered pricing system. A two-tiered pricing system allows you to give your client a lower price at first in exchange for a commitment to a longer-term business relationship.

Another effective pricing strategy is to offer your clients a package or bundle of services that they can easily purchase. This can be especially helpful if you are offering multiple services, such as web design, copywriting, and social media marketing because it allows your clients to choose the combination of services that works best for them.

To make the most out of your business, it is important to focus on strategies that will not only grow your revenue but also allow you to work fewer hours. By using a two-tier or tiered pricing system and offering package or bundled services, you can earn more while working less and grow your business in the process.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are looking to grow your business and earn more clients or gain more visibility in your industry, it is important to establish yourself as the go-to expert and create a PR strategy that works for your business.

With creativity, persistence, and dedication, you can build a successful business as a freelancer and achieve greater success both professionally and financially. Good luck!
