Hello,
In May 2017 I received a message from Upwork with a special promotion with 0% fee when I bring my own client to Upwork (I am a Top rated freelancer) and I received an invitation linked to send it to my client for register and activate this 0% fee. A few days ago, I send it to my client and he registered and started a Upwork contract and now, when the contracted is just ended I realized that I have standard 20% fee. What to do in this situation? It's obvious that I was not intended to bring my client to pay 20% to Upwork.
Thank you!

Actually the post title says it all. Recently I introduced with a potential client who doesn't have a Upwork account or doesn't know Upwork at all. I want him to hire me via Upwork. So will this client be excluded from the usual 20% fees? Is there any offer like this from Upwork?
I'm asking this question because I saw something related this in Upwork before but I couldn't find that article now. Thanks in advance.

Yes - but only if the client has not created their Upwork account yet and you have an invitation link from Upwork which the client uses to sign up for Upwork.
If the client has already created their account it is probably too late.

Thank you Goran. So I will be able to use that link to bring multiple clients to the Upwork?

That's correct, S M Shahriar, as long as they don't have an account on Upwork already.

Im a top rated freelancer. If I bring some clients to Upwork I have the benefict of 0% fee right.
Now in the case I lose my top rated status... I keep that 0% fee benefict with the clients I brought for ever or that benefict aplies only if I stay as top rated.

Hi Said,
If you've brought a client to Upwork via the program, you'll continue to be eligible for the reduced 0% fee on all contracts that you have with that client even if there is a change in your Top Rated status.

Okay - I'm genuinely trying here, but do need some help.
Here's my template so far for my off-site clients:
"Hey XYZ,
How about we move our projects over to Upwork?
My rate wouldn't change so the total project cost would stay the same, you'd just be paying additional 2.75% for payment processing fees.
Every other day, there will be a short window when you won't be able to log in and get in touch with me via Upwork, but that's just because they're working relentlessly on making the site even better!
My invoices won't be EU compliant anymore so you might have some issues there, but you'll get about 5 different documents for each transaction on Upwork, and you can choose the best one.
Since we work on X projects together, you won't be able to separate payments for these for your accountant, but I'd be happy to do this for you each month for just XYZ.
I will be receiving your payments after 14 days or a bit more, instead of 3 days like now, but we'll both feel safer when your funds are in escrow throughout the project.
(Unless your credit card expires - then we'll experience some project suspensions and contracts on hold which you can easily rectify by going to Upwork's support page, clicking on Get Help, then typing in your request, then clicking NO, then clicking Submit Request, and then waiting just a couple of days for their reply.)
On the bright side ... "
.. And that's where I got stuck. Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Ines

This offer was right on time for me. I got a referral the other day to a potential marketing client who never heard of Upwork and until the 0% fee notice arrived in my inbox, I figured we'd have to work through p@yp@l. This new offer was a great talking point for me to drive the opportunity to the next step. This was my note to her:

I got this notification today.
Looks like it came to you at the right time.
For me, my main business model is Upwork itself so it's kinda hard for me.
Anyways, it is a nice initiate for many freelancers.

I hate to say "that's funny," but it is. The 14-day delay in payment is a killer at times and really gets in the way of me managing my funds. Freelancers have boons and famine -- like I had no new contracts for a week three weeks ago and this week I had fantastic luck. Regretfully, rent is due Monday, and eventhough I will end up having my best month on Upwork in August (yes, I know already), my rent will be late because about $600 is in review and 'pending.' Seems to me that when a client chooses to release funds that they should end up in my account. Add to that the silly bank practices at my bank (when they aren't working, even automated payments don't happen because humans review EVERY TRANSACTION)...it can be 16 days. If it falls on a weekend -- and worse, a holiday weekend -- it can be as many as 20 days. That means I have to make rent by the 10th. As the poster said, I can get my clients outside of Upwork to send cash to Paypal immediately.
I like this idea in theory, and it is a huge benefit for Upwork. And I do think some parts of Upwork have improved in the last year. I'm not sure why there has to be a delay, however. I've sold on eBay quite successfully, and there was virtually no real delay in funds getting into my hands. It helped me to keep up inventory and sell more. The more I have to worry about cash flow, the more work I can get done.

Its Rellay great. I will try to bring my new clients here on upwork.
Thanks Upwork making it easier for all of us.

Priya

Right. In theory it is awesome but as it stands now, the payment delay plus additional payment processing fee for the clients is sort of a deal breaker.
The commission we pay is certainly worth it for clients who are already here and are looking for someone. But bringing offline clients over to Upwork and extending the amount of time it takes to get paid (which isn't 14 days for me; it's 5 days after they pay) just seems excessive.

Richard,
I am in 100% agreeance with you. That is one drawback to Upwork. I can get a cash app transfer with 1% instant deposit fee within minutes. There is no reason that once funds are released, they shouldn't be available immediately to transfer to the bank. Let's keep up with the times now.
Oct 3, 2017 03:45:24 AM by Christina W
Totally agree. Waiting for the money earned to go through each stage is a real pain in the backside. I understand why its done but it would be so much better if it could be more instantaneous.

The payment system seems like taken out from previous centuries, when people used to queue up at the bank and after a while the teller would run out of cash, so everyone goes home and comes again next day. For time-based running jobs, I can see there are some days allowed for dispute, but once the time is over or once a job is closed, payment should settle at the earliest, and in most places around the world T+1 is the new norm, if not instant.
