American Expat US Taxes With Non-US Clients?

Hi all! I am a US expat who plans to be working with non-US clients on upwork. I will report this income on my taxes, but I’m wondering if it is still considered foreign income since upwork is an US-based platform?

And if I work with US clients, I assume this income will be taxed?

Thank you!

That is absolutely something you would want to consult a tax professional about. Any random forum poster, even with tax experience, won't be privy to the specifics of your situation, and the advice would be incomplete at best.

Also, you should include relevant portfolio pieces on your profile itself, rather than a link to your website. Linking to a personal website that has a contact form isn't allowed by UpWork. (https://community.upwork.com/t5/Freelancers/Personal-Website/m-p/113359/highlight/true#M57740)

Jen,

By all means get the advice of a lawyer or accountant whose professional specialty includes ex-pat tax issues, but the US government, unlike many other governments (e.g. UK), typically collects income taxes from US cititzens based on the tax status of the recipient of income anywhere in the world (that's you). It doesn't matter who pays you the income, the US tax people want to know about it.

Income taxes paid to other countries may reduce or eliminate your US income taxes and there are other possible tax issues to being outside the US when working, but that's for a specialist to advise you about.
