Anonymity to Freelancers

I'm seeing my full name in chat messages with a hired freelancer.  Am I the only one, or can they see it too? TIA.

Scott,

Names are revealed to both parties once a contract/job is in place.

Scott:

You are client.

The policies for client and freelancers are not the same.

You may use a business name.

You may use an alternative name.

You may use an intermediary.

You may work through project managers and hiring agents.

Do you mean to say, nickname, sobriquet?

If, when registering his account, Upwork asked the OP to enter his legal name, he better darn well enter it.

Upwork might ask him to ID verify at any point in the future.

Yes, they don't routinely ID-verify clients, but they reserve the right to, and are known to do so whenever they so deem fit, esp. to mitigate fraud and money laundering through Upwork, etc.

OP, kindly get comfortable with revealing your real name to your freelancer.

It's a relationship; both parties must take off the mask for it to be a meaningful, rewarding one.

If in doubt about confidentiality, have your freelancer sign an NDA before saying another word to them.
