Appreciate odesk's recent approach to change hour rate.
Thanks to odesk for their recent approach of changing the hour rate. There is no doubt that oDesk is one of the best online marketplace. So I think it's necessary to make this type of changes as soon as possible. I prefer the minimum rate should be at least $1 for the fresh candidate who hasn't got any job yet. And from the 2nd job the minimum rate should $2/$3. $3 will be much better if oDesk consider it.

So please odesk change it to minimum $2/hr...

I think based on the category of job the Odesk can change or fix the minimum hourly rate. How can it possible within $1 to work ? Yes, $3 is the perfect minimum rate to start any job & I also suggest & request to Odesk about the mentioned rate to fix for all.

We are constantly testing different levers to increase the efficiency of the oDesk marketplace to ensure clients are finding the freelancers they need and freelancers are getting the jobs that they are best suited for. We have several tests running to understand what impact a minimum wage would have on the marketplace. As this is a complex area, we expect to run these tests in the marketplace for a significant time period. However we are not currently implementing a universal minimum wage.

Shouldn't freelancers and clients be able to agree on their own hourly rate and not have it dictated by oDesk?
Using India as an example: the minimum wage in India is somewhere between $15 and $23 per week, depending on the region. Under oDesks's new scheme of making $4 per hour the minimum, a full time freelancer from India would earn around 10 times their local minimum wage! And that is the lowest they could bid...
This seems to be eliminating the very reason oDesk exists in the first place - to leverage international markets in order to provide mutually beneficial opportunities for both freelancers and clients.

as an employer who uses odesk, I don't like the min. rate. If odesk continues to push this min. rate, employers will end up using other sites, and then freelancers will end up going to those other sites also.

According to you, ideal freelancer should live in cardboard box, have a prehistoric laptop and use wi-fi from nearby coffee shop. Also he should charge less than 1$ per hour and be very happy with that.

As a person who eats food, I don't like having to pay for it - I think I should be given it for free, and I'm not bothered who else has to have their own life belittled to get it to me for free, because I am me and that's all that matters...
Life is full of things we don't like... so we either put up with them or exploit others to get around them.

Really, I do know that the US and English senses of humour can be quite different (ie, the English have one 😛 ) , but it was hardly subtle and arcane - especially given it was set almost immediately after the post before, which I also quoted. Yes, David is right, it was sarcasm. I make no apologies for it (hold on... maybe Misty is being sarcastic too...)

It can be very hard to effectively show sarcasm on the internet. No matter how ridiculous you sound, someone will probably believe you are serious, or even sincerely agree with your ridiculous statement.

Actually some clients do realize that skill costs $$$. I've had two clients come back to me after initially hiring contractors with below-sea-level fees. Since they have a tight deadline, I asked them to pay twice my rate (because its the weekend and I'm on vacation) and they happily did after realizing the folly of their ways.
Bottom line, ask for the right rate you deserve if you have skills. People will pay the right price if no one else can perform at the level you do. Experts command expert rates and if the client does not want to pay that, just move on. There are plenty of other clients who you will be better off working with.
