Are freelancers who hide their earnings now excluded from search results?

In the past freelancers who hide their earning appeared in search results just without no information about their earnings. Now I can only see freelancers who show their their earnings in the search results, starting with O earned up to XY earned.

ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Margarete,

Freelancers who hid their earnings are still showing in search. I just tested it and saw a few profiles like that. There seems to be be very few freelancers who hid their earnings though.

I was able to find a freelancer with hidden earnings by searching for her full name, but that could be a bug and so your observation might still be correct.

I think searching somebody for the full name is not the problem. I have searched with keywords. It was mentioned before that freelancers with private earnings will disappear in the search results as soon as clients can search freelancers with the search criterium "earnings". However, this feature was never established.

I received an email a couple of months ago referencing this. It said that as of December 20th clients will be given the option to filter their freelancer search results by earnings ranges and because my earnings are private it would affect my visibility in searches filtered by earnings.

Thank you Angela for this information. This is very interesting and was announced before. Therefore I have cancelled my paid membership. I have never received this email you referred to. Maybe it was distributed after my cancellation. Woman Surprised

I did a simple search with keywords. The feature that clients can use earnings as a search string was never established. Clients can only see freelancers' earnings in their search results. It does not make any sense at all if freelancers with paid memberships would disappear completely from search results. No client will find them anymore. Such a change was not necessary at all, especially because clients cannot use "earnings" for their search. Woman Sad

Moreover, earnings does not tell much about the quality and success of a freelancer. Who is the better freelancer, somebody who earned 20k (in one year) or another who earned 100k (in five years)? Woman Wink

Thank you Valeria! They must be very rare now. Maybe a lot of them cancelled their paid membership after having received the above mentioned email. I am not sure if this was the motivation behind this change.

The third time this afternoon that one of my posts disappeared. I just edited one of my posts in this thread and after that it was gone. Strange! I have responded twice to Angela's post. I give up.

Yep, I read your reply stating that you never received the email Angela mentions. You also talked about a feature that was announced but never introduced.

Maybe you're not supposed to remind people of that?

Margarete,

Your post wasn't moderated and is now showing on the thread.

Now I see that clients can search for freelancers according to their earnings. Earnings are a search criterium. This must have been established recently. And now a second this questions arises. I did a search for the most qualified with the highest earnings in the US and in Germany and did not see anybody with private earnings appear in my search results when I used this feature.

Hi Margarete,

We've confirmed before in the previous discussion on the announcement thread that freelancers who hide their earnings will be excluded from search results when the earnings filter is used.

Vladimir, I am confused now. When I started this thread the earnings filter was the old one and Valeria responded that freelancers who keep their earnings private do not disappear from search. Now the more detailed earnings filter has been establised and the client cannot avoid using it, because the filter is applied by default.

Search Location Germany.png

You have told me that the freelancers with private earnings disappear from search results. I have just done research for all freelancers in Germany. Besides the fact that most of them have 0 earnings I have found freelancers whose earnings are not visible in the list but when I open their profile their earnings are visible. Finally, I found one single freelancer in Germany whose profile appears in the list without earnings and also on his profile no earnings are visible. My search covered any jobs, any level of job success, individuals and agencies and any amount earned which is selected by default. So, provided there is only one single freelancer who hides his earnings this would prove that freelancers who keep their earnings private will appear in search results. If they do not appear according to the announcement this would be very bad, because they would never appear in search results. The filter "any amount earned" is selected by default.

Since the next option is $1+, it stands to reason that "any amount earned" includes those with no earnings showing.

That is another miracle. 4,174 freelancers earned something (1 USD or more), 16,133 freelancers did not earn anything = 20,307, exactly the number shown for any amount earned. If I add only the 100+, 1k+ and 10k+ numbers = 4,399 freelancers.

What I want to find out is if freelancers who keep their earnings private definitely disappear from any search results. I have only found one example in my research where the freelancer was shown in the search results despite his private earnings.

If you found one (I found several) it does, by definition, prove that they do NOT disappear.  The vast majority of freelancers don't have the Plus Plan, and it seems the vast majority of those who do don't hide their earnings.

I did another test, selected a freelancer (community guru) where I knew that he keeps his earnings private. I did a research for his country and he appeared in the list, his earnings were hidden in the list. When I clicked on his profile his earnings became uncovered (two digitk+) and so were not private anymore. I mentioned before that I have found 3 profiles like this in my research before for freelancers who live in Germany (private in list, no longer private as soon as I click on the profile).

So, one of the features of the Plus membership does not work anymore (hiding ones earnings), because they can be uncovered after a simple client research. Are the engineers who designed this new feature aware of this?

I cancelled my Plus membership because it was announced that those profile with private earnings will not be shown in search results, now I see that the profiles are still shown in search results (earnings hidden in the list) and the earnings in total are uncovered as soon as the client opens the profile. The earnings for each single job are still private. Freelancers who hide their earnings have reasons for this (not wanting to be targetted by scammers, different socialization & mentality etc.).

Hi Margarete,

Could you please pm me the freelancer's name so we can try to replicate the behaviour you saw?

 Hi Vladimir,

I have compiled all relevant information and have sent you a message with different screenshots and research results. While putting this information together I became aware that the profile with hidden earnings was private when I did the research from my freelancer account. It was private in the list and when I opened the profile the earnings were not visible. When I did a research from my client account the earnings were private in the list as well but uncovered when I opened the profile. I hope this helps.

I am a bit confused about that 'hide my earnings' thing. What are the supposed legitimate reasons for a contractor to choose to hide his or her earnings?
