Background check/credit check

I was told that Upwork conducts background checks or credit checks as a part of the profile approval process. Would someone with Upwork please confirm? I know of a few people who cannot get accepted on Upwork and was told this might be the reason why.

 No background or credit checks for freelancers, there may be some limited checks done for employees under the payroll scheme, but certainly not for freelancers (that would be way too expensive if nothing else)

The reason why people are not accepted is because there are already too many freelancers in almost every category. Every day 10 000 more try to join, and 98% are rejected.

The majority of those who are accepted never win a single contract.

Thank you, Petra. I work with people to help them get on Upwork and work towards being a top-rated freelancer. I am finding that non-U.S. people who have submitted profiles are rejected for their skills. However, someone in the U.S. who has similar skills is accepted. I'm trying to understand why. I can't imagine Upwork or anyone can conduct global background checks with basic information.

 So you charge freelancers to get them onto Upwork.

Hope they get their money back if they can't make money here.

I don't charge freelancers to get them onto Upwork. I work with people who want to transition from their corporate jobs into freelancing.

I was told that Upwork does background checks or credit checks and wanted to confirm since I don't see it in their terms of service.

Hi Michelle

We are happy to welcome freelancers who have skills and experience that are in demand in our marketplace regardless of where they are from. Unfortunately, at times there is not a sufficient demand for certain skills and we do not accept a freelancer’s registration. Additionally, we do have various programs that help us verify a freelancers identity and accuracy of information on their profile but we don't do background or credit checks for freelancers who apply to join Upwork.

No.

Upwork conducts multiple types of identity verification procedures. Most of these are not done until freelancers begin earning money.

Upwork does not refer to there using the phrase “security process.”
