A client I had recently ended a possible long term contract with me because she wasn't satisfied with the illustration instructions I wrote for her. There were meant to be whimsical cartoons about Black/African culture and some of them were supposed to be about Black Women's experience dealing with their hair. Being Black myself, I found it interesting, amidst the calls for diversity, that my identity didn't reflect my experience. Yes, I have female relatives, but I don't necessarily relate to their experiences. I don't think I did anything wrong (the client and I had nothing awful to say between each other), but I wonder if the aforementioned calls have brought upon an unattainable high standard in freelancing, let alone in society. It's just a question I need to put out.
