I just finished a task my client asked me to work on, and I am planning to apply for new jobs. Would it be okay even if my client hasn't ended the contract yet?

You are a freelancer! How many contracts you apply for and how many jobs you accept at any given time is entirely up to you. You don't have to wait until one job ends before applying for more. 

You can take as many contracts at the same time as you can comfortable handle.
