The other day, I wanted to cancel a contract. No funds had been exchanged, but I decided that I should never have accepted in the first place. I found I was unable to cancel and had to beg and plead with the client to cancel. This has never happened before. Is that new?

Freelancers can end contracts at any time. Without needing permission from anybody.
Maybe a user interface element you were accustomed to using was moved to a different location?
Yeah, it was strange. I called it up under "Contracts" but couldn't cancel. Maybe I'll have Upwork check out my "elements" to ensure all is still ok. Thanks, Preston.
I'm not sure what contract you were referring to. But the button, as shown below, should be available on each contract page. The End Contract option is available there.
