There *are* people who are talented in more than one area, so how does it benefit Upwork to force them to choose one specialization?

Nobody is being forced to choose one - you can offer two very different skill sets on one profile...

Personally I would love it if I could have two tabs under one account, the main part being one, but tabs to switch overview, portfolio, possibly feedback.... but in general, especially for newbies, concentrating on one core skill is actually a more profitable way of going about it.

Yes! The tabs idea would be excellent.

May the Upwork powers take notice of this suggestion.

As to the OPs question...

Given that humanzees are multidimensional, many of us have more than one skill set. But, as Petra stated, for new FLs onboarding to the platform, it's best to focus on the most prominent expertise.

One of the main reasons is, you need to become familiar with how UPwork works and assessing viable clients (meaning no scope creep, scamming behaviors, etc.).

Once you're in a contract via Upwork, if you care at all about the public scoring method used here, that contract will impact your JSS (the only time it won't is if you become Top Rated and use the feedback removal mechanism; but, it's limited as to how often this can be deployed).

As you build your profile through completing jobs and gaining feedback, then adding additional skillsets is a viable option.

On the client side, when I'm searching for an FL, I choose those who have particular experience and expertise in that particular area.

Hi,

So after a while, one would be able, say, to have music/arts & entertainment as well as writing/journalism/editing? It says "up to four" somewhere, but only allows one skill set.

I understand that people need to build credibility, but I think it's shorting both freelancers and contractors of connection and completing work.

I get what you're saying, but it is not a good idea to market yourself with too many different skill focuses. It comes off as unprofessional.

Hello Petra, Good Day as now the Specialized Profiles are available, do you think it is good to have one profile with the skills in Accounting and Bookkeeping and other with the skills in Digital Marketing like SEO, Please give me your thoughts, Thanks!

Hi Vladimir,

Hi Diana,

I'll confirm that users can have only account and one freelancer profile.

Just out of curiosity, how is the following possible in this case?

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~018cfaaf62649e567b

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~018cfaaf62649e567b?s=1044578476142100538

https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~018cfaaf62649e567b?s=1017484851352698941

This subcontractor enjoys 3 (three) profiles, with separate work/projects history, portfolio and other per each with shared "Job Success" - e.g. exactly as people here have inquired about, and how it is expected to work.

Thank you for paying attention.

Hi Alex,

Specialized profiles allow you to tailor your profile to your audience and to create variations of your profile that showcase your experience within specific categories. For example, you can separate out the work you've done as a mobile game developer from your work as graphic designer.  To learn more about this check out our guide Here.

We're rolling out specialized profiles slowly starting with freelancers who have completed mobile development or design & creative projects in the past. We're sending invites to create these profiles in batches. Our goal is to launch this option in other categories in early 2019. Thank you.

Hi Françoise,

Could you please clarify the issue you`ve experienced?

Regarding your question, freelancers are allowed to have only one account. Having more than one account is a violation of our TOS.
Freelancers also have the option to create Specialized profiles, besides having their general profile. To clarify, this does not mean that a freelancer is creating another account.
To learn more about Specialised profiles check out this Help Article. If you have any additional questions let me know. Thank you.

Your comment has appeared, and I am not sure why you expect a response from Support 4 minutes (!!) after posting in a public forum (This is NOT "support" - it is the Upwork user forum.)

You are not have allowed to have two accounts, but you can have two specialized profiles on your one user account.

You may educate yourself about it here.
