Can't find myself in Upwork search

Hi Ravindra,

I was just able to find you by a couple of key words and after applying a few filters. Your profile shows pretty high in search despite Writing being a pretty competitive category with a lot of freelancers offering services in it.

Ravindra, you chose to hide your full last name and only show your last name initial. That's why you can't find your profile searching by full first and last names.

Hi Vladimir,

I checked and it looks like you set your profile to show first name and last initial. So searching for your full name will not bring your profile up. Your profile shows when searching by your name and title:

I find you just fine when searching with my client account, but your title is not doing you any favours, as the keywords really aren't what the average client would be typing in the search field.

If I needed an editor I would not search for "impeccable punctuation" - I would assume a quality editor to have that.

That's funny!  I just submitted a ticket, because I can't find myself in a freelancer search (used a browser other than my usual).  I am listed with my full name.  Can't find myself no matter what filters are set!

It seems to me that if a full name is inserted in the search box, the profile of the freelancer being searched should show up independently of others unless there are multiple freelancers with the same name - in which case a list should display.

I have had relatively few invites since migrating from Elance.  And, the only projects still viable in Upwork are those that I inveigled client transfer from Elance.  Until Elance shut down new projects, I was still getting more new work there than I have gotten in the entire six months I have been on Upwork.  Without my migrated and independent clients, I would be dead in the water.

It would be appreciated if a Moderator or someone higher up the food chain could advise if there is anything further I can do to facilitate better results in Upwork - I have modified my profile as directed by Upwork, I continue to submit skill appropriate proposals, and believe I have been patient in expecting results.  However, I am seriously investigating other platforms due to continued issues with Upwork's ability to stabilize the platform and provide timely support.

could you please search for my profile as well? Maybe you can do some magic, because, even if my profile is set to 'public':

- if I write my full name (as expected, as I decided to show only the first letter of my surname) = no results;

- if I look for 'Andrea B', 'Andrea B.', 'andrea b' or 'andrea b." = still no results, even if in the 6 pages there are many namesakes - but also many freelancers with different names (why is that???);

- if I add the filter 'translation' or 'translator' to any of the above = obviously no results;

- I also removed the 'b' and looked for 'andrea english italian' = nothing again;

The above are absolutely unnecessary searches, useful for my purpose only, as I just wanted to find my profile among other profiles. I understand that a new client just looks for a profession or an expertise field, so I went further:

- now I feel a little embarrassed... if I write 'andrea english-italian translator' or 'english-italian translator andrea', which is name + description you can find on my profile = not a single result in 9 pages;

- ok, it's clear I'm not there, I feel optimistic no more, but let's do a last attempt. I removed my name, and left 'english-italian translator' in the search field. Then I tried adding some filters that match my profile (90% JS and up, rate among $10 and $30, top 10% in the Italian Grammar test, at least 100 hours billed). With such a narrow search, I really should be there = dang, still nothing!!!!!!

So, how can a client find me if I am unable to find myself?

I am sure Upwork can fix this (in the past I opened a ticket with the Help Center for the very same reason and I reappeared by magic a few days after my report).

Just so you know...There's a new Upwork policy/game that's evidently designed to force freelancers to buy premium memberships. If a freelancer isn't paid within a given 30-day period, that freelancer's profile is immediately set to "Private". This means that clients searching the platform will not see your profile. The only way to avoid this is to buy a premium membership. I've started a new thread about it because I think it's completely unfair to freelancers.

Upgrading freelancer Membership isn't the only way to have profile set back to public. The freelancer will see a pop-up and an email notification that lists all the options they can use to have their profile set to public. Check out this announcement for more information.

I think you didn't get the point. I have the very same problem. I am unable to find myself no matter what I look for. If I write my name I find everybody else, but not me. If I write my skills and I narrow my search, I still don't find my profile. Our profile is our business card here. How a client is supposed to invite us if our profile doesn't appear among other profiles? Please note that I'm Top Rated, with a 100% JSS and a 5-stars rating and I have jobs enough to keep me busy. But it's quite obvious that there is something wrong.

I have been here 2 years and I voraciously read informs about Upwork in the Forum, help section, and elsewhere.

And I still have no idea how searching for oneself works. I gave up trying to figure this out a long time ago. I am busy here and earn a lot of money without understanding how searching for oneself works. It is definitely not like doing a Google search, so if that is what you are thinking, stop.

Nearly all of my work comes from invites. I rarely submit job applications. So even though I do not understand how to search for myself, and have little success doing so, apparently clients are able to find me. I turn down good invitations every week simply because I am too busy.

Hi Elisa,

You may need to revise your profile and add more information to your profile overview about your skills, experience and what kind of services you are able to offer to clients on Upwork. You can also add some portfolio items and take some tests. 

Make sure to remove the link to your website where you can be contacted directly.

Yes, Andrii, if a client knows your first and last names, they'll be able to find your profile. Note, however, that only first name and last name initial will show on your public profile.
